It's late and I'm bored. But I thought this would be an interesting topic. This is the category of Film Actor you were certain would become huge movie stars - yet for whatever reason didn't quite make it to the A-LIST as far as "film" is concerned. I think there are 4 categories for these actors:

category #1: They simply vanished off the face of the earth or just didn't quite have it. (they went to broadway, had babies, chose the wrong roles or they just quit). Kimberly Williams from Steve Martin's "Father of the Bride" films. James Spader - Not really sure why he didn't make it bigger in film. William Peterson (CSI) I thought would build a nice career after Manhunter - but the guy disappeared for almost 20 years. Remember when William Baldwin was the next big thing? Where did that guy go? In fact where did all of the Baldwin brothers go? Maybe they belong in the thread of actors who don't have star power? Remember 80's film stars Andrew McCarthy and Johnathon Silverman from "Weekend at Bernies," - they sure vanished (actors from 1980's John Hughs films or brat pack members is probably a different category.) I would have bet money that Jeff Goldblum and kevin Kline would be bigger stars today than they are. Matt Dillon seemed on the verge of being a big star and then poof, he only seems to get supporting roles.

category #2: They had issues (drugs or other scandels). Sean Young should have been a bigger star but was a bit psycho. Robert Downey JR. and Eric Roberts seemed on their way to big stardom but had some drug issues. Rob Lowe was supposed to be the biggest star of the "brat pack" but got caught on video with underage girls if I remember correctly.

category #3: They came from TV and audiences simply didn't accept them. Tom Seleck, Ted Danson and Matthew Perry have to be two of the biggest question marks here. Can't quite figure out how they didn't make it big. For Tom it was simply bad luck that Magnum PI producers wouldn't let him film Raiders of the Lost Ark. You'd think that someone from the cast of friends would have made it big by now. The 2 actresses from Cheers, Kirsti Alley and the other gal (can't even remember her name now).

category #4: They died. John Candy and John Belushi were already super stars, however, River Phoenix and Chris Farley were on their way when they died unexpectedly. In fact, I believe River Phoenix would probably have been the biggest star in Hollywood over the past decade.

Something trivial to ponder.

William Peterson is a good one. I thought he was great in To Live and Die in LA.

C. Thomas Howell - what happened to dude?

Shelly Long is the other girl from Cheers.

Anthony Michael Hall was in every other movie in the '80s but seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth.

What has Minnie Driver done lately?

Bobcat Goldwaith?

I thought Emilio Estevez was going to have stardom power but he has been out of the limelight too.

I read an interview with James Spader a few years ago where he basically said he just works the bare minimum to pay the rent and not interested in stardom.

I think some people just don't have the interest in the huge parts and are contempt in supporting roles

Boston Legal may be one of the best sitcoms on TV. As was the Practice that this show spun off from with Spader.

I'm not so sure that Boston Legal is a sitcom :|

What?
Amanda Peterson, I thought she would go on to a huge carreer but she just kinda poofed off the face of the planet.

Doesn't anything with Shatner in it count as a sitcom?

I’ll mention James Marshall. I didn’t necessarily think he would become a huge star, but he nailed his roles in Cadence, Gladiator (the 1992 movie), and A Few Good Men. I really liked those three movies, but I haven’t seen him since.

Great choice. I always wondered what happened to her. Can't Buy Me Love is one of those movies that I watch every time I stumble upon it.

You are right that Spader is pretty good in Boston legal. It's just a shame he didn't make more films. His last film, "Secretary" was pretty good.

Here's a crazy thought. A couple of years ago before "Pirates" we might be talking about Johnny Depp on this list. Amazing how his fortunes changed over night. Not that he wasn't a star, just that he hadn't quite hit that super star status everyone expected of him.

I'll agree with you on Minnie Driver, but you really think the others were that good? I want to come work for you and your low expectations.

He's the "star" on the USA networks Dead Zone (my wife loves that show) -- but I'm not even sure if its still on the air.

He was also in Freddy Got Fingered...which I am ashamed to admit I watched to the end.

Came up with another over the weekend, not because I personally thought he was a good actor, just he seemed to be headed to a leading man situation and has just vanished, Christian Slater.

Yeah. He kinda went off the deep end.

Yeah, running from the police after a car crash is a bad idea. Also, turning down leading roles in The Crow and Interview with the Vampire were also bad decisions.

Speaking of bad decisions I saw a bio where Scott Baio said he turned down the lead role in Top Gun?

Oops.
