San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk found himself in the center of trade rumors for the second consecutive offseason.
Last year the 49ers were on the precipice of dealing the 2023 Second-Team All-Pro to the Pittsburgh Steelers before eventually signing him to a four-year contract extension. While there may be some lingering tension between Aiyuk and the team after a lengthy, messy contract negotiation, it sounds like we're headed toward another conclusion where Aiyuk stays in the Bay Area.
ESPN's Adam Schefter on a recent episode of his podcast said there's a hard timeline on the 49ers' opportunity to deal Aiyuk, and because of that he doesn't foresee a deal coming to fruition.
"If that trade doesn't materialize by (April 1), it's not happening at all," Schefter said. "Because the 49ers aren't going to pay a $23 million roster bonus and then wind up dealing him this summer before the trade deadline. It's just not going to happen. So, we officially are on the clock for a Brandon Aiyuk trade in the next week, which, again, hasn't happened yet. Don't know that it will happen. John Lynch floated the idea, doesn't sound like it's likely."
An Aiyuk trade this offseason never really made sense for San Francisco to begin with. They just signed him to be part of their long-term core, and he's injured. Any deal would have not gotten the return the 49ers would seek in a trade for a player of Aiyuk's caliber.
Things can change quickly in the NFL and if a team suddenly decides it needs Aiyuk and wants to shell out a first-round pick to get him, then maybe a trade happens. Until a team is ready to come to the table with that kind of offer, though, it sounds like Aiyuk will be in San Francisco.
