Could the Jacksonville Jaguars be looking to trade down from the fifth overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft?
With draft week here, ESPN's Adam Schefter emptied his notebook, and among the topics discussed were potential trade-down candidates. On that list of teams mentioned by Schefter were the Jaguars.
One executive would tell Schefter that the Jaguars are a "wild card" when it comes to the first round of this year's NFL draft. There are several different directions they could go with that fifth overall pick, and oftentimes, when a team has options, that is a key ingredient in trading down.
We can also look at the current construction of the Jaguars' roster as another reason why Gladstone may be looking to accumulate more picks.
According to Over the Cap, the Jaguars have only 59 players on their roster. So, even with 10 draft picks added to this team, that leaves 21 roster spots to be filled by UDFAs--the most in the NFL.
Now, perhaps the Jaguars are fine with doing that, but such a heavy amount of UDFAs probably isn't going to elevate the roster like the Jaguars need.
But in addition to that, if we look at GM James Gladstone's history and the LA Rams and the quick turnaround they had after a five-win season in 2022, a crucial part of that equation was having a hefty 24 draft picks between the 2023 and 2024 drafts.
As Gladstone looks to further reshape and elevate this Jaguars' roster, he could be looking to take a similar approach. After all, Gladstone did say earlier this offseason that he wants the Jaguars to be a team that builds through the NFL draft.
The potential tricky part with this is that even if the Jaguars want to trade down, they first need a trade partner, which Schefter adds could be hard to come by, with there being a "lack of teams willing to trade up."
The one team that Schefter mentioned as a potential candidate is the Denver Broncos, who hold the 20th overall pick, which would be a big jump down the draft board for the Jaguars.
