His understudy needs to do more than just sit on the bench; else there's not much value in spending such a high draft choice. I'll be interested in seeing how each of these guys performs at the combine. Pass-blocking is not so important as they will be in the game to create mis-matches. They do need to be good pass catchers IMO to fit with the plan.

I like Peterson but i just can't see the Cards taking him at 5. Their biggest free agent signing ever was Edge and i can't see them spending all that money for Peterson after spending all that money on Edge after just 1 year of service.I'm not saying Peterson would be a bad pick but i doubt that he is the choice.Especially when you see what Willie Parker did for Whiz and he wasn't even drafted. Peterson does bring speed to the position,like Willie Parker does, which is something that is sorely lacking.

RBs, LBs, and Ss tend to fall on draft projections leading up to the draft. CBs, QBs, OTs and WRs often climb.

I wouldn't be surprised if Peterson drops. But, I think he'll stay in the top 10.

This is kind of ticky-tacky, but I've found that lately, you're right about LBs, Ss, and RBs, but you ought to add OTs & QBs to that list. Matt Leinart was supposed to go earlier in the last draft, and let's not forget the Aaron Rodgers debacle. Remember how Marcus McNeill and Winston Justice were sure-fire Top 10 picks?

DEs and DTs are the fastest late-risers (Mario Williams, Tamba Hali, John McCargo, Dewayne Robertson, Kamerion Wembley), then cornerbacks (Ty Hill and Jason Allen). WRs tend to go about where there supposed to. It's hard to remember a serious run on those guys, or a weird head-scratcher. Centers and Guards have been kind of oddball late-risers in the last few drafts, with guys like Logan Mankins, Chris Spencer, Shawn Andrews, and Davin Joseph going higher than anticipated.

I like Peterson but i just can't see the Cards taking him at 5. I'm also intrigued by the Buckeye receiver ... just think AD would be much more durable. All I ever saw him do at OU was run the ball, play after play after play sometimes 35-40 times a game. That's not what we need. We need a versatile multi-talented player that don't come along very often ... like LT. As I recall coming out of TTech, all Tomlinson did was carry the rock too... don't believe he became this triple threat he is now until he spent a few seasons in the league. If that's the potential for AD or Lynch than I'm very much on-board with Skkorp.

I think teams are starting to value them more. There's still the perception that only tackles and LTs in particular are worth big money on the line. That's been changing and I think the impact Hutch had on the offensive performance of Seattle and Minnesota will garner more attention to that. Even before Alexander got hurt he wasn't running wild like last year and the vikings running attack improved dramatically this year (they also added a much better RB too.)

I never understood why centers weren't considered more important. They're responsible for making all of the line calls. If you have a bad C you're team isn't going to go very far.

Don't ever recall either McNeill or Justice being sure-fire Top 10s. Yeah, they were thought to be 1st round picks and some thought there was a chance they might slip into the Top 10, but McNeill's fall started pretty early once his medical info started coming out.

So when do you define when a late rise starts? When they declare vs. where they go in the draft? The last couple days? Because only McCargo was a real late riser on that list. Hard to call Mario Williams a late riser since he was considered a Top 5 pick the second he came out and only went higher after his Combine Testing. Up until he signed with Houston and people call the Texans idiots for not taking Bush, Clayton and Mort would regularly say Mario was #1 on 8-12 teams boards. Hali probably went right he should have, and ditto with Wimbley. Robertson did rise, but it wasn't the last few days before the draft. Allen was a wild card due to his injury, but it was never inconceivable he'd go mid-1st because of his talent level. Hill was the 1st corner off the board.

I think any DE who shows above average athleticism can shoot up the boards because everyone wants their own Dwight Freeney. DTs rise fast because there are so few standouts at that position that everyone is desperate for a playmaker there.

Any CB who runs a fast 40 is going to get drafted high regardless of college production. All these freak WRs are coming in to the league and there's no one to cover them.
