If we learned anything from the case of James Wiseman, the college basketball player at Memphis, it is that the NCAA can tie up schools with its bylaws and threaten them, unless the schools come down on athletes who have stepped over some line. Wiseman played a different sport and his case had nothing to do with the name/image/likeness furor, but when you watch college athletes Monday night in the national championship game between LSU and Clemson, understand you are watching a billion-dollar enterprise where college administrators and athletic directors and television moguls and their sponsors rake in money. The NCAA and its schools want to protect that enterprise, and what happened to Wiseman could happen to any of those players in tonight's game should they try and exercise their basic rights.
