What's the best of the remaining AGP graphics cards out?

I'm thinking of upgrading my video card and adding RAM, but I'm not sure I went to shell out anything for a motherboard with PCI-Express just yet.

Right now, I have an AMD64 3500+, ATI Radeon 9600XT, and 1 GB of RAM. I do like to play games when I can, but I don't have to have everything at the highest settings.

AGP quickly became a dead technoligy when PCI-E came out. The best AGP card when I bought mine was a Raedon x850XT? (don't remember sub letters which are probably important). A quick search on NewEgg shows a Raedon X1950PRO as the most expensive one. I'm not sure how good that is, because I've been removed from the minor details for a good amount of time now.

You won't see a very big improvement by upgrading your card because your current AGP card isn't low end. As much as you say you don't want to have to upgrade to PCI-E, if you want a noticable improvement, that's probably your only option. Being that you're still on AGP, it's a good possibility that you're still using IDE cables for your Hard Drives and CD/DVD Drives. Save your money for a new computer so you can RAID together some SATA drives and get a low end (normally better than High End AGP) PCI-E card. You'll likely see a drastic improvement.

The most powerful AGP card out there is the Radeon 1950XT Pro. It isn't light years ahead of the x850xt line in terms of frame rate power. However, it will allow you to turn on all the eye candy.

The 1950xt pro will probably be the last hurrah for AGP mobo's.

A good mobo can be cheaper than a new card anyway, it'd be a great idea to save a little longer and get a good board and a medium PCI-E card.
We're all waiting on DX10 anyway. If we want to or not.
