Cardinals TV ratings increase is biggest in the NFLby Sports 620 KTAR (October 13th, 2009 @ 6:16pm)

TEMPE, Ariz. - With a winning season and a trip to the Super Bowl comes a larger following - and the numbers are reflecting just that.

The local television ratings for the Cardinals game broadcasts are up an astounding 42% from this time last season.

The increase is the largest percentage increase in the NFL.

The four Cardinals regular season broadcasts have averaged a 20.3 rating and 38 share, up from a 14.3 rating and 30 share after four games in the 2008 season.

Last Sunday's thriller against the Texans garnered a 18.7 rating and 38 share, making it the week's most-watched television program in Phoenix.

The Cardinals were seeing this trend in the preseason when they saw a 10.3 rating and 19 share locally in the game against the Chargers. That was more than double the average of their 2008 preseason

Its worth noting, especially to the out of town fans, that the amount of Card's decals on the back of vehicles and license plate frames have increased ten fold.

Amazing isn't it?

It used to be you could go for days being the only one. Now there are flags on houses, decals on vehicles, hats shirts. I don't think out-of-towners; especially those whose local teams have a strong following can understand what it means to us locals.

They had NFL day at my grandson's daycare, they do this every so often and for the first time when I picked him up the Cards gear out numbered every other team at least 3-1, before he was a little dot of red in a sea of mostly blue. He may only be 4 but he loves his Cards.

As an out of towner I cannot physically see the change, but it is not lost on me how significant a change the last year or so has been.

What is really great is the exceptance of the "new comers" by the "hardcore" guys that have been with the team for a long time.

It is a come one, come all situation and it is great. I hope it is really an enjoyable change for the locals.

Been a season tix holder since 2001. And all of this increased attention and acceptance of Cards has really hit home this year when I am now being asked if I have any spare tickets to games by non season tix holders!!! Really never thought I see this day!

This is great news, and means that the Cards have earned some legitimacy in the eyes of the Valley. The work's not done, though. I don't think people are expecting another Super Bowl appearance--but what they really want is games that matter in the greater scheme of things. Stay in the hunt, Cards :newcards:

LOL, remember the day when you used to have to bribe people to go to games with you? We have 4 tickets and when my daughters started becoming teens and we couldn't get them to sit in the hot sun or be seen with thier oh-so uncool parents in public anymore we would have a hard time filling thier seats.

Now I have a list of people who are willing at a moments notice to go with. My youngest daughter even picked up her own pair of season tickets this year.

I honestly believe that the Cardinals could very well become America's darlings. America loves underdogs and overnight sensations. The Cardinals have an allure to them that's very appealing. Plus, they, and the Chargers still have the best helmets in the NFL.

great news, its what the cards needed just at the right time.

We need generations growing up Cards fans not drifting off to another NFL team, we grow bigger and stronger.

Plus they can be extremely fun to watch in comparision to other football teams.

We talked for years about how the TV blackouts severely hurt the Cards ability to develop a fan base in the Valley. Add a Super Bowl appearance to actually having the home town team's games on TV for the last 3.25 years and you have the ingredients necessary for cooking up a strong local fan base.

How could Arizona kids grow up Cardinal fans if all they ever saw on TV were Denver and Dallas?

Seems like in the mid 70's the Cards were on TV alot here in Dallas. It made me the fan I am today. Explain that one!!! I simply loved their all white uni's & the bird with the piercing eye.

I understand the current winning Bengals can't find their fans who have gone underground or just given up.Maybe they all commited suicide.

It will be another Blackout in Cincy this week for a team thats only lost one game.Plus just beat their number one rival in Baltimore.I know the steelers are probably rated just as high too.

I'm sure the southern ohio and northern Kentucky people must be hit hard by the down turn in the economy.Maybe that is more of the problem than a lack of fans. Its probably the money to go to the games.Well Goodell does'nt care it seems.

Maybe it was the two games in 1970 where the Cards beat Dallas 20-7 and then again 38-0 on Monday night football when the Cards ran for 242 yards and 4 TDs.

The Cards had a 4 game stretch that season where they allowed a grand total of 6 points.

Three straight shutouts ending with that 38-0 win over the Cowboys! I nag NFL films about doing a doc on that every time I see them.
