Ahkello Witherspoon was still a pending free agent when the Los Angeles Rams signed Davante Adams, but that didn’t stop him from getting excited about the addition. Despite not yet being re-signed by the Rams, Witherspoon was happy to see Los Angeles land a premier receiver like Adams.
Now that Witherspoon has officially been brought back on a one-year deal, he can call himself Adams’ teammate. That has him anxiously awaiting the start of OTAs and eventually training camp, knowing he gets to practice against the veteran receiver.
“I think for me personally, it's the first moment where I get overly excited, where I'm not really inside of myself when I see them sign a guy like Davante Adams,” he said, “because that's the joy and the passion for me is being able to compete against somebody like that on a daily basis and take that training to go to play on game day and it be much calmer and much simpler because I've had elite reps against guys like Davante and Puka (Nacua) – Coop when he was here. Those are the moments that I love and just being excited about a space that's improving and trying to take the next steps and wanting to be a part of it.”
Witherspoon expects to get better from battling with Adams and Nacua in practice every day – an example of iron sharpening iron. And as primarily an outside cornerback, he’s going to see a lot of both players on the practice field when the Rams run one-on-ones and team drills.
Witherspoon is coming off a strong season with the Rams where he got a late start after signing in September, and now with a full offseason of work, he expects to be at his best in 2025.
"Just a chance to be my best,” he said. “That's all I'm looking forward to this year. Just the time to focus on my craft and fine-tune some of the things that I can improve on with the opportunity to be the best that I can be for my teammates. That's my focus."
