After leading the Aiken boys basketball team to a state runner-up finish, Derrell Black has resigned as the Falcons’ head coach.

Black was 50-24 in three seasons at Aiken. That includes a 27-2 mark this past season when he led the Falcons to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III state championship game. The Falcons lost a tough 63-61 decision to Louisville, and also took its only regular-season defeat by two points to Trotwood-Madison.

The Aiken athletic department posted a message on X Friday afternoon.

“The Athletic Department at Aiken High School wants to thank Derrell Black for his time as our Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. In three years Coach Black restored the pride in the Aiken Basketball program and elevated the program to new heights - achieving historic success in the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference and at the state level. The awards and accolades are numerous, but are overshadowed by the life taught through basketball. While we will miss you on the sidelines, we are happy you will have more time to focus on the most important team - your family.”

Black graduated from Hughes in 2009 and took over as head coach of his alma mater in 2020. At Hughes, he replaced Bryan Wyant who left there for his current position as Princeton’s head coach.

Black played briefly at Trine University in Agnola, Indiana, before returning to the University of Cincinnati.

He started his coaching career at Hughes at the junior high level with current Purcell Marian head girls basketball coach Jamar Mosley. After one year, he joined the varsity program as an assistant and was also the head coach of the Hughes freshman team for four years and the junior varsity club for two. In 2017, he helped Hughes capture a CMAC freshman championship and led the junior varsity squad to a pair of winning seasons.
