Johnson numbers
03/06/2007 09:28 AM

It's a good time to be a free agent offensive lineman. Center Al Johnson, who agreed to terms with the Cardinals Monday, is just the latest to cash in during this lucrative market.

According to an NFL source, Johnson's four-year deal is worth $17.5 million, including a $3.5 million signing bonus. He'll make salaries of $3.5 million in each year.

His deal is worth more than the one recently signed by Giants center Shaun O'Hara, who will make $19 million over five years. Johnson's yearly average is nearly $4.4 million while O'Hara's is $3.8 million.

Dallas center Andre Gurode, who signed recently, is getting an average of about $5 million. Until last week, Minnesota's Matt Birk was believed to the highest paid center at $4.3 million a year.

Johnson's cap figure per year should be about $4.375 million each year. With the recent signings of Marcel Shipp and Hanik Milligan, the Cardinals should be about $14 million 5o $15 million under the salary cap. That's just an estimate, though.

He is without question believed by the coaching staff and FO to be a starter on this OL somewhere. This was not a depth signing at all.

Low bonus money which makes him easy to cut if things just don't work out. Heck, if we cut him today we break even cap wise. Structured like a guy we are giving a chance to, but not married to.

Resonable, considering the outrageous contracts that have already been signed.

No wonder he said he really likes it here .. we gave him a very generous contract ..

If our other contract offers are this generous then we may be seeing some signings coming up ...

I am assuming the below statement just means this years signings at the Center position because Bentley got more than those figures when he signed with the Browns.

Dallas center Andre Gurode, who signed recently, is getting an average of about $5 million. Until last week, Minnesota's Matt Birk was believed to the highest paid center at $4.3 million a year.

Leave it to the Cardinals to address a position on the line not needing the most help.

Newsflash...3.5/yr makes him the highest paid olineman on the roster. I will guess that he starts and it won't be at T.

He was signed to prevent the exchange problems Lienart had with Leckey. Based on height, Lienart did not like having to bend down with Leckey. Notice how tall Al Johnson is?

We spent 3m/yr more(with prorated SB) for a C that is .5 inch taller than our current one?

2003 Combine results

Al Johnson 6-3 1/2 305 23% body fat.

2004

Nick Leckey 6-3 290

It wasn't Leckey's height that was the problem--it was his stance. ML basically had to sit down to take the snap from him.

Conversely, it was his stance that allowed him to get a good push off of the ball.

go much more smoothly, I always thought poor Matt having to waste time bending down to take the snap and then get into postition!

It's astonishing, but this is the going rate now. Even for "decent" players.

If we get to be reincarnated, forget all that stuff about becoming a left-handed pitcher. The NFL over the next 10 years is going to put every other sport to shame in salaries.

I don't really get it either. I thought if you were going to upgrade Center then Kalil in the draft would have been the choice. We need CB's, FS, OLB, and OT, but we sign a backup center ? Cards logic just does not seem to make sence. Then we move all the 08 bonuses up to this year losing 16 million in the process while still not replacing, BIG, Huff, and Grifith.

Don Banks of SI.com had the Johnson signing at #8 of the deals he didn't like.
