I like Rickman. But the way the film industry works, there is a depressing tendency for him to get type cast as comic Grand Guignol villains. As such, he is always equal to himself, (unforgettable as the Sheriff of Nottingham or the sleazy political spinmaster in Bob Roberts) but underused IMHO. He is capable of so many more dimensions, and is never so good as when he is cast against type.

My favorite performnace by him though is as the revenant cellist in Anthony Minghella's Truly Madly Deeply, we have a delightfully nuanced comic portrayal, seductive enough
to get called back from the dead by the grief of his distraught widow, but also sufficiently annoying, flimsy and full of ticks, as to teach her to dispense with his memory and get on with her life.

So what do you guys think, do you think there's more to him than just a villain?

You would have seen more of Rickman , in Sherrif of Nottingham, but Kevin Costner, during post production editing, determined that Alan was stealing the screen from him, so much of the Rickman footage ended up being cut. Ya think maybe Alan is a bit better actor than Costner ?

No doubt.

Alan is also great in Galaxy Quest and of course, the Harry Potter movies!

Tune into next Monday - my 1st Movie of the Day has him in perhaps what I think is his best performance.

From what I hear, Rickman plays a large variety of roles on the stage. I wish I could see some of them, but alas, it hasn't happened yet.

There's an HBO movie that he's in with Mos Def  coming soon. He plays a scientist, I believe.

He's not bad in Love Actually.

And he's not "technically" a bad guy in the Harry Potter flicks.

We still aren't sure on the Harry Potter line, not until book 7 is done, but I think you're right.

***spoiler***

And actually (pun intended), he is a bad guy in Love Actually. Cheating on your wife is a pretty bad thing, and he doesn't end up looking very good at the end.

Rickman is fantastic as Snape. I can't imagine anyone else doing the role as well.
