Alexandre Lacazette faces an investigation and punishment from Arsenal after being filmed with a balloon at his mouth, having previously been warned over inhaling nitrous oxide. The France striker, 28, was alleged to have sent the footage to friends with a text reading “at home, chilling and doing balloons”. “This is a private matter which we are taking seriously. It will be handled internally,” read a statement from Arsenal. Lacazette was among the players spoken to by Arsenal last season when images emerged of players inhaling from balloons. CCTV footage showed Lacazette, Matteo Guendouzi, Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at a private party in London, all inhaling from balloons allegedly containing nitrous oxide. “Laughing gas” is given to dental patients as a painkiller but is also used as a social drug because of the euphoria. According to the Frank website for drug support there are risks of “falling unconscious and/or suffocating from the lack of oxygen”. It is not illegal to possess but it is illegal to give away or sell. Lacazette is among the Arsenal players whose future has appeared uncertain after failing to agree a new contract at the Emirates Stadium. The former Lyon striker, who arrived in the Premier League in 2017, has two full seasons left on his current deal and his value will decrease should his club fail to tie him to a new long-term deal. He started 13 games in the Premier League this season before football closed its doors due to the coronavirus pandemic. Aubameyang was leading the attack for Mikel Arteta before the season was halted, although Lacazette had scored in three of his last four appearances. Arteta is likely to take a dim view should the internal investigation into the footage show ill-discipline during the lockdown.
