How is that not a remake of the first movie?
It sure seems to be a remake of Alien. But I'm okay with that. I liked the original when it came out but felt it was quite dated when I last watched it. So, start the series of films again, leave Ridley Scott at home and I'll give them a try.

I loved the original and it still holds up for me. What is your problem with Ridley Scott?

Covenant and to a lesser extent, Prometheus have led me to finally accept he needs to have nothing more to do with the Alien franchise. But to be fair I've never been overly fond of Ridley's movies. So often, he's taken what should have been a great ride and sucked the energy out of it. He's made movies I've liked, a bunch of them, but even then, I've watched many of them thinking another director would have improved the overall feel of the movie. If I want to make a historical drama with great visuals and heavy atmosphere, he's an excellent choice for Director but otherwise I'd look elsewhere.

Lot of talk online that this looks more like an homage to Alien: Isolation than a remake of the first movie. There's even rumors that one of the characters is Amanda Ripley from that game.

Maybe that's a problem with starting a series with a totally groundbreaking movie. It's hard to follow and new ground to break is hard to find.

The Matrix was awesome...not so much the sequels.

Avatar was amazing... the way of water...meh

Alien was jaw dropping...100% OMFG, but when the sequels came we had already seen it all before.
There is a wonder to groundbreaking movies. A sense of discovery that's impossible to have in any sequel because it can't be quantified for reproduction

Hmm. Anybody here see it? Looked like a remake but with these reviews now I'm very tempted. Huge fan of the first two movies.
It was fantastic. I’ll try to avoid spoilers.

It’s basically Alien 1.5, and slots in perfectly between Alien and Aliens. Unlike Covenant and Prometheus, it feels like the same universe - the spaceships and settings feel real. And even though I can’t stand Prometheus and will only tolerate Covenant because Fassbender knocked it out of the park, it cleverly incorporates some of that lore and somewhat redeems the two prequels.

The vast majority of the FX are practical, and where CGI is done it’s pretty good with the exception of one character. That and the sound mix are my only gripes - sometimes the background made it hard to hear what the characters were saying. Looking forward to watching it in my home theater with subtitles, heh.

With one exception the actors are mostly unknowns, which definitely works. David Jonnson knocks it out of the park as Andy.

My personal rankings:

Alien/Aliens
Romulus
3
AVP
Resurrection
AVPR
Covenant
A septic tank
Prometheus

Cool. I thought your WOW above was just a reaction to the trailer above it. :D Alright, I'm going. I've been digging the movie theater experience lately. It's been a while since I've seen so many in a relatively short time. Saw Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and now this.
