NEW YORK - The Exeter High School girls track relay team saved its best 800 meters for its final race of the season.
Exeter's sophomore quartet of Lexi Paterna, Bri Paterna, Izzy Bremer and Eli Cross shattered its own school record in the 4x800-meter relay at the Nike Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York City.
The Exeter foursome placed third overall in a time of 9 minutes, 15.17 seconds, earning All-American honors. Their previous record was 9:23.84.
In a collective statement after the race, the girls said, "Going into the race we were all pretty nervous because we knew we were racing against some of the fastest kids in the country," they said. "But we also knew the race was going to be very competitive and we wanted to do our best in order to see what we were capable of achieving. We trusted our training, the work we put in, and each other. We are thrilled with the outcome and are so happy we got to share this experience. Overall we feel extremely grateful to be given this opportunity and even more so to share it with each other."
Bucks County (Pennsylvania) High School won the 20-team field in a time of 9:13.53, while North Stars (New York) placed second in 9:14.02. The top six teams earned All-American status.
"I am speechless," Exeter head coach Nate Leveille said. "They could not have run a better race as a team. Just an incredible effort."
