According to DIRECTV, they aren't carrying any of the All-Star action in HD. But, coming on 1/26 is the Capitals vs. Hurricanes in HD? What's up.

Lame. This is 2007, I firmly believe EVERY sporting event should be in HD. I don't care about lame excuses about costs, a sporting event in standard definition may as well be in black and white.

I just called DIRECTV and the guy said it would be Ch. 96. You can only get 96 and 97 if you have the newer MPEG-4 equipment with the spot beam satellite and 5 LNB dish. That's means you need a H20 receiver or HR20 DVR receiver.

I heard them mention pond hockey twice early tonight...was there a reason for that?

Alright, I now see the NHL All-Star game is added to the DIRECTV guide on Ch. 95 in High Definition. Their guide must be out of date or they've had enough calls to add it. It wasn't there yesterday.

It starts at 8:00p.m. EST, 6:00 p.m. for those in Arizona.

Well, the All-Star Game is in glorious HD (at least for Cox customers). Yanic with an early goal for the West.

It showed up on the DIRECTV guide this morning in HD on Ch. 95. Perrault has two goals, through two periods, but so does Rolston. Hopefully Perrault can get the hat trick and the MVP.

Hockey with all the players coasting, little defense, and no checking barely qualifies as hockey, but the All-Star Game still had a couple interesting qualities. A few observations:

The rail cam isn't a bad idea, but it needs to be up higher, which won't happen unless the glass is significantly raised. I understand why the NHL wants to implement it (as the cameras sit right now you see five rows worth of back of people's heads), but as it stands right now the rail cam is just at too flat of an angle.

The new jersey style looks fine, at first glance it is difficult to tell that they have even been changed much, except for the fact that they are no longer tucked in.

And lastly, Marty Turco talking to the broadcasters via microphone while playing in net was hilarious. Its a shame that you can't have that in the regular season for obvious reasons, but it was great fun to watch.
