Alonso is staying, says Leverkusen sporting director Rolfes

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes is adamant that coach Xabi Alonso will remain with last season's double winners next term.

The Spaniard's side are back in the Bundesliga title race and face a German Cup semi-final at third division Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday.

Alonso's success has meant he is constantly linked in the media with other clubs, but Rolfes remains confident.

"No, he is staying. There is nothing else. He has said that there is nothing. He has a contract with us," Rolfes told reporters after the 3-1 victory against Bochum on Friday.

Alonso, who has been at Leverkusen since October 2022, has a contract until 2026.

Speculation has increased recently about Alonso going back to former club Real Madrid given their current boss Carlo Ancelotti is set to appear before a Madrid court next week on charges of tax evasion.

Rolfes said he is not worried about Madrid or Alonso failing to clarify his future during a press conference on Thursday.

"In all the discussions we have had about this season and the next, as well as in all our planning, we are in close communication. That is the situation," Rolfes said.

Alonso was expected to leave after last season's stunning double triumph, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Liverpool linked, but he decided to stay on the Rhine.
