Amaré Stoudemire Named NBA Player of the Week
Posted: Feb. 26, 2007
After leading the Suns to a perfect 4-0 week following the All-Star break, center Amaré Stoudemire was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for Feb. 19-25, the NBA announced today.
This is Stoudemire’s third career NBA Player of the Week honor, but his first since the 2004-05 season. He also won the award on Dec. 13, 2004 and Nov. 22, 2004.
The 6-10, 245-pound center lifted the team to a 4-0 record last week after the Suns had lost three consecutive games for the first time since the opening two weeks of the season. Stoudemire, 24, averaged 30.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.00 blocks and 1.00 steals on 62.3 percent shooting in four victories (three double-doubles) over the L.A. Clippers, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks.
The five-year NBA veteran concluded the week with a dominating performance against the Hawks on Feb. 25, scoring a season-high 43 points, game-high 16 rebounds, season-high six assists and team-high three blocks in a 115-106 victory at Atlanta as the Suns improved to 13-0 on the road against the Eastern Conference. It also marked Stoudemire’s eighth career 40-point game in the regular season (2nd in 2006-07), only one shy of a franchise record (9 by Walter Davis and Tom Chambers).
The two-time NBA All-Star (2005, 2007) is averaging a team-best 20.6 points (21st in NBA) and is posting career highs in rebounds (9.6, 15th), field goal percentage (.593, 5th) and double-doubles (32, 7th) in 2006-07. Stoudemire, who scored a Suns All-Star record 29 points in the 2007 NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas on Feb. 18, has appeared in every game this season (56) after missing virtually the entire 2005-06 season due to two separate knee surgeries and played in only three contests.
This is the fourth NBA Player of the Week honor for the Suns this season. Guard Steve Nash won it three times (Dec. 11, 2006, Jan. 22, 2007 and Jan. 29, 2007).
Phoenix’s 43-13 record matches the franchise’s best start through 56 games (other, 1992-93 and 2004-05). The Suns face the Indiana Pacers (29-26) at 5 p.m. Phoenix time Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Conseco Fieldhouse.
