Ugh.

Amare out four months
Suns star has microfracture procedure on left knee

The Suns received devastating news this morning regarding their All-Star big man.

Suns star Amaré Stoudemire’s arthroscopic surgery evolved into a microfracture procedure on his left knee this morning, according to his manager.

Team physician and orthopedic surgeon Thomas Carter found Stoudemire’s cartilage damage to be more severe than anticipated. Stoudermire’s manager, Rodney Rice, said the power forward is expected be out for four months because of the surgery.

“It was better to do the microfracture now instead of chancing that the lesion would grow, which might affect Amaré down the road,” said Rice, who was in the room during this morning’s scope. “It was best to do the procedure now.”

Suns fans remember how microfracture surgery greatly changed the game of Penny Hardaway but Rice said Stoudemire should not be as adversely affected because he is having the operation at a younger age and at a time when the lesion is smaller. During a microfracture, holes are drilled into the bone. The cells then come up with the blood through the holes and form into cartilage.

“He’s got a lot of things in his favor to come back in a strong way,” Rice said.

uhh, pretty bad news

so he's expected back around mid-January.

Better now than later. Who are the players in the draft?

Four months, but I expect him out the rest of the season. No reason to take a chance. Rest Marion and Nash this year. No sense in wearing them down.

Let the young players develop.

Isn't four months away mid-February?

you're right. i was too optimistic and counted October wrong. Duh

Hmm, maybe, just maybe, we need another big man. Like Brian Skinner.

Do you guys think he's available?

If Grant goes down
KT and Burke won't cut it. And Boris really is not a long-term solution at the 4 (as is Shawn btw)

The Suns should still be a playoff team, but this certainly ruins any chance of winning the division. Gonna need someone to step up in a big way.

It does not ruin ANY chance of winning the division...we are a good team, and will be good without him...

I'm not trying to be overly pessimistic or negative, but of all the bad things to have happened to this franchise during its history, this is quite possibly the worst.

I'm in shock. This is our worst nightmare.

What I would like to see is the Suns make a move for a big man, use the trade expemtion to get Chris Wilcox, while I dont think he is a long term answer I think he can fill in in the short term and a combination of a pick and trade exemption should get it done...

I'm more concerned with the long term. If he doesn't fully recover this is a huge blow to the team for the next ten years.

I'm also pissed that I bought tickets for the Heat game back-to-back with the Spurs game in January.

Ideally, the Suns will be playing well without him, developing some defensive abilities and then playing with a mid-range seeding through February. Then, Amare slowly incorporates himself into the lineup over the next two months, and please, please, please, gets up to full strength by the time the playoffs start. They could "upset" in the first round and be on the ground running in the second round.

Please?

I'm devastated...... Microfracture surgery was exactly what I was fearing. I know he's a lot younger than most guys that have had it and struggled afterwards, but it's not a procedure like Tommy John surgery where the guys end up stronger afterwards.

Well, good thing I fought off the temptation to put money on the Suns at 12:1 for this season's title...

Poor Amare - he must be so bummed. Damnation, someone should have checked out that recurring sore knee right off the bat.

I'm certainly discouraged - we only have so much of Steve Nash left.

Guess we'll really see what D'Antoni can do as a coach, now.

Chris Wilcox would be nice, but maybe the Clips want to package him with Maggette, like the latest Pierce-Maggette rumors indicate

It's honestly not totally out of the question. If Amare can come back to full strength by the playoffs, this could be a better team for it. With Steve Nash at the point(barring any more injuries), I'm very confident this team will still average at least 100 points a game. If the team can build some real, honest defense, Amare could be the final piece come playoff time to lead them to a championship.

Or, this could ruin his career, he'll never be the same again, and the Suns will be stuck with a dead weight contract for the next six years.

Hey, when is Greg Oden available for the draft?

Just the news i do not want to hear as I am home on disability recovering from my own surgery. The team should probably look for some veteran help.
Hopefully we can circle the wagons until he returns

Well, this sucks. I am just as frustrated as everyone as to why he didn't get this checked out after the playoffs. Very frustrated.

We definitely need to pick up another big man. If we don't, we're in a lot of trouble. We can't go into the season with just Brian Grant and Kurt Thomas as our big men.

This may mean Tischer will NOT be going to the NBDL.

it's as i feared . . . microfracture. those of us that are fans of both the cards and suns know the worst of this surgery. we've seen it fail time and again. penny, wadsworth, swann. and now we get to add amare to the list? i know i'm being an alarmist, but the evidence has been pretty overwhelmingly bad on this stuff.

who knows, maybe it's a blessing in disguise. remember the year that david robinson went down for the season and the spurs tanked all year and ended up with tim duncan too? maybe that's what we're in store for. though it's a year early (oden is the following draft) for us to benefit the way the spurs did. maybe some stud will emerge as a legit #1 for us this year. also, i don't think we'll get the #1, but w/o amare's presence this team is going to be a LOT worse. w/o an inside presence (and neither kurt nor brian grant are post players in a traditional sense) there is no need to double the post which, in turn, will result on tighter defense on the perimeter. and we still don't have many players than can create their own shots. so what do you get with a team with no inside presence, a bunch of set shooters and steve nash? a bad year.

No one is ever 100% after microfracture surgery. That's just a fact.

The question is how much Stoudemire will lose and how well he'll be able to compensate for it with different skills, the way Webber and Hill have done. (I know those aren't microfracture cases, but same difference.) I think it's possible that he'll still have a solid career and maybe even be a perennial All-Star. But the Stoudemire who struck fear in the hearts of every opponent, and who seemed to hold the promise for this franchise's greatest successes, is gone.
