Don't freak out but . . .

There is a strong chance that Amare Stoudemire will be held out of some night scrimmages at training camp next week in Tucson.

Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said Stoudemire tweaked a previously sprained left ankle two weeks ago and has been examined by Suns team physician Thomas Carter and Los Angeles ankle specialist Richard Ferkel. Stoudemire flew to L.A. on Tuesday to see Ferkell for about 90 minutes.

The doctor, who performed Manu Ginobili's surgery three weeks ago, concurred with Carter's evaluation that Stoudemire only needed some rest. Stoudemire will still be able to do all of the morning session's non-contact work with walking through offenses and defenses and shooting, Kerr said.

that article by itself isn't much to sneeze at, but the longer article in the republic combined with Coro's dish is newsworthy:

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/articles/2008/09/24/20080924spt-suns.html

That article says that his ankle has been giving him some problems months. I think that's news-worthy, especially seeing what a lingering ankle problem did to Manu last year and will continue to do him this year.

Is it the end of the world? Not even close, but it's something to keep an eye on.

I'm not sure the longer piece was any more newsworth, so I used the shorter, more reassuring piece.

Assuming all he needs is rest, we can expect to see the other guys get more minutes in the scrimmages. Someone like Amundsen can show if he can play.

Admundsen? I think Lopez, Dragic and Barnes will eat up those minutes. those guys will all get to play with Nash and the starters more, a good thing. Unfortunately, this means that amare will not be improving his passing or defensive skills in the preseason.

Irish, apparently some of the people have never heard "Don't shoot the messenger".

I think this is definitely news-worthy, especially considering Amare's history of taking his time coming back from ankle injuries.

I doubt he'll miss a single pre-season game, but its still worth posting about.

A lot more interesting than Shaq's planned retirement date. :D

Sort of related to the Amare situation, do the Suns need another big man for training camp purposes now that the previously invited Czech big man has signed elsewhere?

Just rest Stoudemire and tell Diaw to step up. O'Neal and Diaw should be an effective front-court combination. Are we led to believe that O'Neal will be ready to go on opening night?

I'd like more on Shaq as well.

None the less, iIt is important to see what they can do with Amare. He's a very big part of the offense, but they need to know what to do if he's not there.

I stand corrected. With Amare's preseason on the line his tweeked ankle should indeed be on Suns fans minds.

Oh...you said he probably wont even miss a preseason game? I'll sleep well now.....zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Coro was on Bickley and MJ the other morning in their 9 o'clock hour. He was saying that Shaq is a little heavier than what they would've like to have seen coming back from the offseason, but that he was working out 4-5 times a week with former UFC great Royce Gracie in Florida. The extent of the workouts is unknown, but he said the Suns were "okay" with where he was physically.

Take that how you will.

Shaq worked out this summer but not entirely as he said he would. After the Suns were eliminated, O'Neal said that he would be in Phoenix this summer and work out with the Suns athletic training staff. For anyone who follows the news, you could see he was a lot of places but Phoenix. He was working on foreclosures in Orlando, working on a high-rise in Newark, attending his sons' basketball games at Disneyworld, getting family photo taken at a theme park, rapping about Kobe, etc. That's not to say he didn't work out, though. Suns head athletic trainer went to Orlando to work him out for about a week. O'Neal dropped into Phoenix a couple times over the summer and worked out in the training room and on the court when he was in town, even coming in on his own at night. The biggest thing he did was work out with Royce Gracie's gym. Gracie is an Ultimate Fighting legend and apparently Shaq has been really into those type of workouts the past two years. He now weighs about the same as he finished last season.

That's exactly the same kind of thing that O'Neal's team has been saying about him at this point of each of the last several years. The translation is, "Yeah, we know he doesn't take his conditioning seriously, but we hope he can use the first couple of months of the season to get back in shape without hurting himself. It has worked before."
