We have a team option on 2005-2006, then his next year is a qualifying option for something like 3.5M. When should we lock him up? How much will we give him? Just curious. Peace! Dave

it will be a max contract, 25% of the salery cap. because we will lock him up before his last year of his current contract is up it will be for 6 years after he is done with this contract.

heck if kmart gets a max contact marion's is going to seem much more like a good contract.

Is the max contract always 25% of the salary cap? If so, we would be looking at 6 years and 70M with a cap of 45M? I know the cap will go up over the next few years. I am just ignorant on what a max contract means in the NBA in regards to the cap, etc. Please inform.

Contracts can be a max of 25% of the cap (depending on years in the league), or 105% of the players previous salary (whichever is greater).

A players team can offer raises up to 12.5% annually. Other teams can offer 10% annual raises.

A players team can offer a 7 year deal, other teams can offer 6 year deals.

Anyways, this will most likely be different by the time Amare can get an extension. He isn't elegible for one until next summer, however the CBA expires on June 30th next year. The new CBA will almost certainly have new rules on contracts (The big thing owners want are fewer guaranteed years).

no for a player who is in their first contract is starts at 25% of the cap. i believe that it can be raised each year 12.5% of they are your own player.

If they have been in the league for 7 years, it is 30%. 9 years it is 35%.

If the cap fell very low, there is also a 9,000,000 max. However, the cap should always be above 36 million, so that won't be triggered.

Like I said though, those are the current rules. Amare wont be available for an extension under this CBA.

Marion isn't more valueable than Martin. At best he is as valueable.

lets see
marion vs kmart
ppg 19.0 16.7
rpg 9.3 9.5
apg 2.7 2.5
spg 2.11 1.46
bpg 1.32 1.26
fg% .440 .486
ft% .851 .684
3pt% .340 .280

well lets see marion beats kmart in points, assist, steals, blocks, ft%, and 3pt%. kmart tops marion only in rebounds and fg%. some of the areas that marion out does kmart are areas that power forwards generally lead small forwards by a great deal like blocks. also the rebounds that marion bring are simply outstanding out of the small forward spot. when you look at the # and think about one being a small forward vs a power forward there is no question that marion is better then martin there is only a question of by how much. if marion returns to his nba averages on shooting % .460 vs martins .468 the line between this guys gets even bigger.

Statistics aren't everything.

And Martin plays half a quarter less to get those statistics.
We will see if Martin can keep those numbers on a Kiddless team.

Isn't that what everyone said about Marion three years ago?

I think they are comparable players, but I disagree with those who say that Martin could play SF effectively.

I would take Martin over Marion because of his intensity. Very close call. Martin has a ruggedness that would spill over onto teammates more than Marion does.

But why would you pay two people the Max at the same postition? If I was had an new franchise and I could pick between them then I would go with Martin, but if I already had a star in Amare I wouldn't even think twice about Marion would be my pick

Good point. I was just looking at them as talents, not how they would fit in. I was doing a math problem in isolation, not in context of a written word problem. LOL
