I was surprised, on searching the forum, that no one had started an American Gods thread.

The first few episodes were nails. I've really been enjoying the slow burn pacing, similar to the book. The casting, writing, directing, and visuals have all been spot on.

Sadly, the last episode just crapped the bed. I mean, 100%

100% flashback of exactly what we already knew, exploring a character that doesn't have much depth, and doesn't require it for the story. When I say 100% flashback, I mean it, too. It did absolutely nothing to further the plot, and killed the tone, pace, and flow. Garbage writing.

I agree. I was into this. Last ep was kinda stupid.

I tried to get in to the book but couldn't get past page 40. Might give the series a try.

This show started so well, but fell so quickly into politically correct story-ruining BS. Why, why, why do we have to take a work that isn't about a female main character and shoehorn a huge female main character role into it? I really wanted the actual story, and it began by delivering that, but quickly sidelined the main character for much of the season to make the story about a minor character, because some suit decided she had to be a main character. I stuck it out until the end of the season, but man, did I have to wash my hands of the show. The writers just destroyed what was a great story, tearing the heart of the narrative out to make it a completely different story.

So why come back to complain about it? Starz just did a trailer montage about strong women, and it featured American Gods. It featured a bit character from the book and story that did not have a major female character. THAT'S how twisted and warped the story in this show became. It would be like taking Game of Thrones and making it into a racial biopic, or turning the Dresden Files into a story about immigration. Square pegs and round holes.

My neighbor turned me onto this show. I really liked it. I have no context in terms of the books since I didn't read it. It was weird and fun.

It was the Shadow Moon/Mr. Wednesday show, with Shadow Moon as the MC, spiced with some pretty cool side stories about gods and immigrants. While his wife is a character that has a few pivotal moments, she is NOT the second-billed character that she is on the show. In the show, we go an entire episode with the MC sidelined, just to bloat her story line--and that's without considering how much she takes up in other episodes. The book was INCREDIBLE for the Shadow Moon/Mr. Wednesday stuff, and....piss on the show.
