I just started watching this one. It’s currently sitting at #200 on IMDB’s top 250 list.

Plot Summary

Genres: Drama, Mystery
Tagline: Last year's number one bestseller. This year's (we hope) number one motion picture!
Plot Outline In a murder trial, the defendant says he suffered temporary insanity after the victim raped his wife. What is the truth, and will he win his case?
Plot Synopsis: Since being voted out of office as local prosecutor, Paul Biegler spends more time fishing than keeping up his law practice. But he does take on the defence of a lieutenant from the local army camp charged with murdering a bar-owner who raped his wife. The lieutenant is uncooperative, the wife a ******, the judge from out of town, and the prosecution lead by a sharp city lawyer. It seems Biegler will need all his country wiles to make any sort of case of it.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential video
Otto Preminger turned this 1959 courtroom drama, based on the popular novel, into terrific adult drama. James Stewart stars as a small-town lawyer who defends an army officer (Ben Gazzara) accused of murdering a bartender who assaulted his wife (Lee Remick). The taut script, large performance by Stewart, and then-daring elements of the story (words like "panties" are spoken in the context of discussing a sex crime) give the action a certain immediacy--which you don't find very often in today's movies about jurisprudence. Nice work by Remick and Gazzara, as well as George C. Scott, Arthur O'Connell, and real-life judge Joseph N. Welch, who plays the judge in this film. A very good experience all around. --Tom Keogh

I just watched it.

and real-life judge Joseph N. Welch, who plays the judge in this film.

This explains a lot, I thought the judge acted very strange.

I thought it was interesting, but not spectacular. Apparently there was a lot controversy over this film when it was released back in 1959. IMDB listed this in the trivia section.

Part of the controversy surrounding this movie was because it included use of the words "bitch", "contraceptive", "panties", "penetration", "rape", "****" and "sperm".
