“Oh, wow,” was Andre Agassi’s surprised response, when told the last time an American man had reached the semifinals at the U.S. Open was in 2006, when Andy Roddick ultimately lost in the final to Roger Federer. “You almost got to blame four guys, right, if you think about it,” the retired eight-time Grand Slam champion said, referring to Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer. John Isner, the 11th seed ousted in the quarterfinals on Tuesday by No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro, became the second American to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since 2009, when he got there at Wimbledon in July.
