PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers had a tough 24-58 season in a year where they were expected to contend for a title. Injuries to their top players derailed anything coach Nick Nurse and Co. wanted to do on the floor.
They had a revolving door of players throughout the season due to the injuries combined with all of the newcomers from the 2024 offseason. Andre Drummond was one of those players who returned to Philadelphia after he had a stint with them in the 2021-22 season under the guidance of coach Doc Rivers.
In his second stint with them, this was his first time, obviously, being coached Nurse and he gave his thoughts on his new coach after his first season back with the Sixers.
"It was good," Drummond said after a pause. "It was different. I've never played for a guy like Nick before who is more laid back and allows his guys to kind of figure it out, but he's also very intelligent, too. He knows the game very well. Obviously, he's won a championship, and he's been very successful in his career. So I think having another year under my belt with him, I think our chemistry together will be a lot better, because he's never coached me either, so he's still trying to figure me out."
While Drummond expects things to continue to grow with Nurse, the Sixers acquired Quentin Grimes at the deadline who received two months of tutelage under Nurse. He gave a lot of praise to his new coach and the championship pedigree he brings to the position.
"He’s a really good coach," Grimes said of Nurse. "A really good X’s and O’s, really detailed, preparation, and everything. Gets us ready to play every single game. He knows exactly the game plan. Just injuries kind of bogged that down a little bit, not able to play with everybody at full strength, but he's a really good coach. I mean, he won the championship for a reason. So you can definitely tell he has really good habits as a head coach. Definitely."
It remains to be seen whether Drummond and Grimes will return as they both have options to go elsewhere in 2025. Drummond has a player option, which he says he plans to exercise, and Grimes is a restricted free agent. If they are both back in the 2025-26 season, Nurse will do what he does best and put each in a position to succeed.
