Any anime fans here? I'm talking about the clean kind, not the stuff on the internet. lol Please keep recommendations tentacle free. ;)

I watched a little when I was a kid. We called it "Japanimation." Back then I watched Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell. I even watched some of the really old anime films like Ringing Bell, Unico, etc. Two of the most unquestionably messed up movies of all time. :p If you're ever feeling cheerful and you want to get rid of that feeling, just watch Ringing Bell, you will hate the world again right away. lol So funny, me and my sisters used to bawl everytime we watched that movie and it got to the point where we didn't want to watch it and my dad would threaten us with that instead of grounding. lol "You guys knock it off or I'm gonna put Ringing Bell on!"

Recently my 13 year old daughter has gotten into it. So we have watched a couple of series together.

Even some non ****** Animes can have adult themes so you have to be cautious with kids. Some of these have a lot of violence and ofcourse the famous anime blood and gore, none of that bothers me. There is some cursing in these but no F-bombs just a bunch of shoots and hecks. One thing that I love about anime and why I allow my daughter to watch some of them is that they are certainly not afraid to go dark. That's ok tho, the world can be a dark place and she is very emotionally mature, far more than me. lol

Attack on Titan was pretty cool. I loved the concept and some of the characters. Mikasa and Levi are just total bad asses! The action is crazy cool and the Titans themselves are freaking creepy as heck. lol The dialogue drove me nuts. I mean anime is famous for pausing in the middle of action so the character can have a moral dilemma or a self pep talk, lol, but that one took it to the extreme. Every action scene in the series would pause and have a introspective moment of conversation and it drove me nuts. lol Still a fun series. Word is season 2 will be out soon. Which is good because season 1 basically answered zero questions about anything, which really annoyed my daughter, but maybe answers are on the way. :)

Sword Art Online was pretty cool, but I lost interest in it pretty quick and slept through a lot of the second half. The animation is cool and some of the concepts and fights are amazing, it just got a bit repetitive.

Death Note Holy crap talk about dark. This show went places man. Dark places. lol This show is awesome. Seriously I would highly reccomend it, you can watch it on netflix. It's about a kid who finds this book where whomevers name you write in it dies in whatever manner you specify. But man, is it dark.

I love these shows because they have prompted some really interesting and profound conversations between me and my daughter.

So any other anime fans and what are you watching?

If you're into Sci-Fi, check out 'Battle of the Planets'. I used to watch it way back in the seventies. It was an American adaptation of the Japanese cartoon, 'Gatchaman'. The American version was re-edited to be more friendly to the sensibilities of an American audience and was voiced by American talents. Most notably, Casey Kasem, the popular radio announcer. (He did some 'Superfriends' episodes back then too.)

Here's the summary:

Battle of the Planets cast five young people as G-Force, consisting of Mark, Jason, Princess, Keyop, and Tiny. G-Force protects Earth from planet Spectra and other attacks from beyond space. The most prominent field commander of the Spectra forces was a villainous, masked individual known as Zoltar. Zoltar would receive his orders directly from a being he would refer to as "Luminous One". The Luminous One would appear as a ghost-like, disembodied, floating head. Who, or what this being actually was, is never explained in any detail throughout the series.

The main ship of the G-Force team was called the Phoenix, which could carry, transport and deploy four smaller vehicles, each operated by one team member. The four vehicles included a futuristic race car with various hidden weapons driven by Jason; this vehicle was concealed within the Phoenix's nosecone. The "galacti-cycle", a futuristic motor cycle the Princess rode, was stored within the left wing capsule of the Phoenix. Keyop's "Space Bubble", an all-terrain, tank-like vehicle capable of VTOL as well as being a submersible craft, was held in the right storage capsule of the Phoenix. And lastly, a futuristic jet fighter Mark pilots was stored in the top rear section of the Phoenix command island structure, and which used its tail fin to make up the center tail fin of the Phoenix. The fifth crew member, Tiny, was assigned to pilot the Phoenix rather than one of the detachable craft.

A regularly featured plot device was the transformation of the Phoenix into a flaming bird-shaped craft able to handle virtually any exceptional situation by functioning as a sort of giant, super blowtorch called the Fiery Phoenix. The Phoenix’s primary weapon was a supply of rockets called "TBX missiles" in the series. It also occasionally flaunted a powerful solar-powered energy blaster, although the team had the misfortune of choosing very cloudy days to use it.

The G-Force team themselves would use a combination of martial arts skill, ninja-like weapons, and their "cerebonic" powers to dispatch hordes of enemy soldiers and overcome other obstacles. Their bird-like costumes include wing-like capes that could fan out and function nearly identically to parachutes and/or wing suits, enabling the G-Force members to drift or glide down to safety from heights which would otherwise prove fatal.

The G-Force members stay in contact through a wrist-band communicator device which also serves as a way for them to change instantly into their G-Force uniforms or back into their civilian clothes. Other weapons seen displayed by various team members include: Mark's sonic boomerang, a bird-shaped boomerang with razor sharp wings; Jason's and Tiny's multi-purpose gadget guns, which can be outfitted with grappling hook and line, drill bits, etc.; and Keyop's and Princess's yo-yo bombs, which could be used as bolas, darts, and explosive devices. Other weapons include feathers with a sharpened steel quill that could be used as deadly throwing darts, and mini-grenades shaped like ball bearings with spike studs.

That sounds cool and it's retro! Thanks Puckhead, I will check it out.

Someone really needs to watch Death Note, so I have someone to discuss this insanity with. lol My girlfriend wont watch it. It is my favorite psychological thriller series (real or animated) ever, period.

Looks like 'Death Note' is on Hulu. I've still never tried out that service. I believe there is a 30 day trial on Xbox for free.

I'm curious as to how well 'Battle of the Planets' holds up because it's been a while.

I used to watch Bleach...

Cool I will have to check it out.

Currently I'm watching Black Butler which is flippin awesome as well as Full Metal Alchemist.

Oh and for you netflix users, check out The 7 Deadly Sins, that show is freaking hilarious.

Also, I stuck it out on Sword Art Online. It's not great, but I admit it's kindof a guilty pleasure show for me. My daughter really loves it and I like the gaming angle as a former Online Game player. :)

Just finished a new one called

Fate/Stay Night
[unlimited blade works]

I really liked it. It's one of the most beautifully drawn animes ever and the score was incredible.

Downsides, The plot was a bit of a mess at times, there were a few things that made absolutely no sense, but still Super interesting premise. Could have been developed more, I admit it fell apart a little at the end, but only by anime standards. Still better than the junk on TV. :) IMO

This character here, Saber is my favorite.

I'm just going to keep talking to myself in this thread until I convert some of you people! lol jk. Before I do, the site I watch most of my anime on is called Crunchyroll
www.crunchyroll.com They send me guest passes all the time that I can send to whoever, I think you get to watch for a week for free or something without putting in a credit card. So if anyone wants one just ask or post your email. Nothing in it for me, so no pressure, I just have 3 I'm not using.

So some more recommendations.

Tokyo Ghoul - Dark, scary, bloody, disturbing, awesome. So freakin awesome. Very much an adult show, not because of sex or nudity, I dont watch that kind of anime lol, it's just really scary and bloody and did I say awesome? Because it's freakin awesome.

Knights of Sidonia - Attack on Titan in space essentially, but still entertaining as heck!

Durarara! - If you try this one, please, give yourself about 5 episodes. They are short and myself and everyone else who is a fan of this show has said the same thing. It takes a few episodes to get into it. I watched the first episode like 3 times before I continued on, then I finally did after a friend begged me to and oh man I'm glad I did. It's essentially a comedy, but with tons of drama and plot twists and stuff. The characters are great. It's probably in my top 3 animes of all time now. Definitely for like 13 plus, just has some mild language. A holes, S and B words and dangits...

Food wars - Seriously, this show is so freakin hilarious. It's completely absurd and slightly perverted, (in a PG13 teenager kindof way nothing bad) but it's so funny. It's basically an animated cooking show, but the reactions to how "good" the food is are hilarious, the characters are funny. There's a guy who refuses to dress because it interferes with his creative genius as a chef. People tend to go into blissful fantasies where the food is so good they rip all their clothes off and dance through meadows, lol, but it never really shows anything more than a sideboob or a butt, and it's all meant to be comedy. Like I said PG13

Sweetness and lightning - 100% G rated. If you were ever going to watch anime with young kids, this is the one. It's about this single father and his adorable daughter learning how to take care of themselves. It's a tear jerker but in the best possible way. SO FREAKING ADORABLE. My youngest says: "It's so cute my heart exploded!"

Haikyuu - This is a show about this high school volleyball team. Sports animes have never been my thing, but this one is really endearing and the characters are so good you really cant help but root for them. Again pretty safe for kids other than the occasional "dangit" the uncensored one. :)

Fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood: Dont watch the fullmetal alchemist that is on Netflix, if you're going to watch it, find FMA Brotherhood, it's way better. This is good for all ages, a really cool show.

Big Red Rage, idk if you check out this thread, but you should check out Tokyo Ghoul, for some reason when typing this out I was like, BRR would dig it! That show is sick, just like most of us here. :)

Oh and LIAC, I watched Bleach, it's good! Thanks for the recommendation.
