Police: 3 Pacers players involved in bar fight; no charges filed

February 7, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley and teammates Marquis Daniels and Keith McLeod were involved in a fight with a bar manager after a home loss to Golden State, police said.

No one was immediately arrested or charged after the fight early Tuesday. Indianapolis police Lt. Doug Scheffel said Wednesday it would take several days to complete the investigation to determine if charges would be filed.

The police report said the bar manager of the 8 Seconds Saloon might have a fractured jaw and severed earlobe. He told officers that Tinsley had threatened to kill him, the report said. Witnesses told officers that McLeod shoved people during the scuffle.

The confrontation followed another fight involving a person who employees thought was trying to steal coats from the coat check area, police said.

The manager and witnesses told officers that Tinsley, Daniels and a man with them punched the manager in the face and head.

The manager "stated that he was unable to defend himself, at which time both witnesses ... stated that they felt that the life of the victim was in danger," according to the report.

Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said in a statement Wednesday that the team was aware of the allegations but would have no further comment until police complete the investigation.

A phone number provided by the NBA Players Association for Tinsley's agent, Raymond J. Brothers, was answered by a message saying it was no longer in service.

Tinsley was at a strip club with then-Pacers teammate Stephen Jackson in October when a fight broke out during which Jackson fired a gun into the air several times before he was hit by a car.

Tinsley was not charged in that fight, but Jackson faces criminal recklessness and other charges. Jackson has pleaded not guilty.

What is it about sports guys getting into trouble at strip clubs? I have no idea how to count the number of incidents, but it seems like most of the incidents were at strip clubs.

I can't speak from experience, but I would guess that the rate of "incidents" is rather high at strip clubs in general. So if NBA players are in the habit of frequenting them, the odds are that they'll get into trouble sooner or later.

This is not a moral statement but a cultural one: Strip clubs are creepy, and I have a hard time not getting the creeps over dudes who go to strip clubs. I guess I'm not surprised that so many NBA and NFL players like to go to strip clubs. Too much money wasted on youth and all that. But I had a hard time rooting for Barkley and his crew because they frequented that type of thing, and it still bothers me today. Really makes me wonder if I'm underestimating the negative impact of the iconoclastic jock culture in our country.

As a former Strip club dj with a decade in the field I have to say that i agree with your post to a great degree.
I used to see Phx Suns players at a club I MC'd at. Never any trouble.
The rodeo cowboys and stock car racers would get rowdy.
Worst fight I ever saw was pipefitters vs carpenters brawl.
The creepyness comes from the cocaine and meth being consumed and dealt.
The iconoclstic jock culture is actually orthodox and rigid within its' own mileu - see the Ameche thread...

Good Lord.. Almost and soon as Larry Bird thinks he's gotten rid of the nut cases on his team, more of them go out get in trouble.. Larry has gotta be wondering why he's subjecting himself to this..
