PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns picked up the option on guard Joe Johnson's contract for the 2004-2005 season, the team said.
Johnson, whose contract pays him about $1.7 million this season, will make about $2.2 million next season.
Johnson was the Suns' second-leading scorer in the preseason with 17.6 points. He averaged 8.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his two seasons with Phoenix and Boston.
Johnson was the 10th pick in the 2001 National Basketball Association Draft out of the University of Arkansas by Boston. He was traded to Phoenix as part of a five-player swap that sent Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers to the Celtics in February 2002.
The Suns begin their season Tuesday in San Antonio.
