I don't know. Harry Potter and Pirates both had a built in audience. Transformers may be the best but I don't know if it will do the most business.

True. We shall see. Repeat viewers willl be the key.

Spiderman will end up on top - summer's a war of attrition - still some major flicks out there that will cut the legs off Potter and Tranformers.

but I do think that there will be 5 300 million $ (Tranformers and Potter will barely get there) movies when all is said and done and that's got to be a record for one summer.

I think Transformers easily surpasses 300 million. Heres a good site to track the daily take. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/

shane, believe me, I know about the Mojo - my bet it the movie tops out at 310. It already had a 50% drop after it's first weekend and will continue to trend down at the same pace. The one thing it has going for it is that there's nothing GINORMOUS on the horizon until Bourne 3 the first week in August, but it will be down to #3 after next week when Sandler's atrociousouness likely brings in 45 million and then it'll be even further down the week after that when the Simpsons comes out.

1 Spider-Man 3 Sony $336,436,184

2 Shrek the Third P/DW $321,012,359

3 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BV $307,671,262

4 Transformers P/DW $305,060,000

5 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix WB $276,031,008

Looks like you were absolutley right Cheese. I think you said that Transformers wouldnt break 310,000,000 You were dead on with that, Harry potter and that Spidey would top all. Nobody will catch that total. Im still shocked that Shrek 3 is that high and that Pirates with its run time did better than the others too.

Now when I think of cheese I'll picture Ralph Macchio. You brought this on yourself.

Here's sort of an interesting point..... Here's how the films rate worldwide:

1. Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - $956,171,457

2. Spiderman 3 - $890,207,456

3. Harry Potter XXXIX (just kidding) - $873,316,414

4. Shrek the 3rd - $736,489,373

5. Transformers - $661,075,050

What boggles the mind is once you consider worldwide sales, video rentals, and DVD sales (plus what should be a killer box set), Spiderman Trilogy will end up in Star Wars territory. Does it exceed $3 billion? I think it might.

That could fund a lot more super hero movies. Makes you wonder what the next franchise will be. Don't think there's anything left that will turn the whole world on its ear.

With today's movie-making technology, a live action Dr. Strange could be really cool.

Spiderman 3 sucked balls. How is it doing so well?

monsterous hype + a great trailer + built in audience due to success financially/critically of first two movies + two week head start on the rest of the huge summer movies = box office bonanza.

Captain America could do it, IMO.

Hmmm. Perhaps if the next presidential election inspires some kind of new patriotism, sure, but I can't see the quintessential comic icon of Nuclear Family America being a big hit abroad right now. Or even in this country. I seem to recall Captain America only gaining a second wind post-Vietnam War during the bicentennial, but the TV show died a horrible death before Reagan took office (IIRC).

The writers of that one would have to come up with a story that redefined patriotism, IMO.

(Comic geek mode: ON)

I'd be up for Flash or Green Lantern (my personal fave), but those guys are far too esoteric to inspire Spiderman or Batman type numbers. It will never happen because the money's not there. Some Hollywood types seem enamored with Aquaman, but ... I admit, I've always hated Aquaman and I would boycott the movie just because. OK, so he can swim. Big deal? What happens when the crime takes place away from sea water? Then he's just one of us!

Id be interested in seeing an ov er the top, uber shlocky Justice League film. Like combine that Ben Stiller Hero film of several years ago with the Justice League/Legion of Doom in a Austin Powers farce of a hero freakout.

Meanwhile, back in the halls of justice, Aquaman continues to wonder why HE got screwed in the superpowers department. A local porpoise tells him to quit crying.

The storylines taking place in the world today make a lot of potential Captain America plots even more relevant. i.e. Cap is at odds with the way the country is run--he wakes up from a 60-year slumber to find a far different world from the WWII-era and in the process of fighting terrorism opens the nation's eyes to its wayward path.

I'm not a big fan of Aquaman, but this is a pretty tired and erroneous assumption. If you were really turning on your comic book geek mode, you wouldn't have repeated the line rehashed by just about every stand up comic out there. Aquaman ISN'T useless out of the water. He's still super-strong and damned near impervious to physical harm.

And, in fact, an Aquaman or Namor (marvel's aquaman counterpart) movie could be pretty good, IMO. I think they're both in discussions.

For a while it was rumored that Jack Black was going to star in a GL movie. Glad that was killed. But, Ryan Reynolds was rumored to be in a David Goyer written Flash movie, and I think that sounds genius.

Sounds fairly political to me. It's a tight-rope act, IMO, one that studios never want to walk.

I've read the comic books and Aquaman is nothing more than your average, ordinary tortured super hero with a blurry past and a lot of angst about serving men he shares little biology with. The difference between him and Superman is half the world didn't grow up wanting to be Aquaman. That and the fact that Aquaman requires common transportation on land.

Always felt like the writers of Aquaman messed up. They should have made him French.

Ryan Reynolds as Flash would be very cool. The movie comes with a built-in Snickers commercial, too.

right, because controversial movies never get any attention or make any money.

then you haven't read an aquaman comic book in decades.

Another super hero parody/farce? The mind shrivels at the thought.

That's true. And when I did read them it was with a scowling, squinting face, so I might've missed some of the action windows. ;)

C'mon. You can admit it. It will feel good: Green Lantern rules all.

hehe
