I was sure brought back to reality after watching our first team against the Chargers...

Our defence didnt look good at all IMO. They ran all over us, and had alot of open guys on the passes...

Our "O" doesnt look real bad, but it doesnt look real good either. We cant run the ball yet at all, and our passing game still looks shaky.

I think our second & third string guys look pretty good, but our starters didnt do as well as I thought they would vs the Chargers.

I hope they can step it up for the Bears.

As I posted on another thread, we were flat for this game. We were taking blows, not giving them. San Diego had more to prove, and it showed.

As for being worried, I've never been fully confident that we're going to be really good, so nothing really changed. We should expect inconsistency all year long.

I truely expect kinda alot from the O. With A more efficiant QB, and two solid RB's, we should beable to do alot.

The D I dont expect to be a top ten, but I do think it will be faster and alittle better at the LOS. But KVB wont be there to help.

But we didn't play those two "solid RBs" and we made little attempt to pass as the game plan was to evalute 3/4/5 string RBs

First, I think that inconsistency will be the norm from a team that is still very young.

On O, it certainly seemed like Sully was going to run regardless of front, etc. I really want to see what this line looks like with starting guards and center in. Not a single first down play action call -- all passing done at predictable downs, etc.

On D, last night I think we saw the downside of the one gap, attack style play. Lots of traps, draws, misdirection. On several plays, the Cards DT one gapped himself right out of the play, . We will see.

Frankly, I think both teams played very vanilla looks on offense and defense with the first teams.

On the postive, Fisher, Thompson, Pace, King all look good. While their names were never really called, I thought both Bryant and Bell provided enough push up the middle that Brees repeatedly dumped to the back (it was one read and dump) and/or Flutie never could step up an throw.

Worried. Yeah. Always

The Charger game represented "gut check time." We'd be crazy to think we'd be able to walk all over every NFL club.

The Chargers are a tough physical team. What this game tells me is that we're not as tough as they are on both sides of the ball. But fortunately, we have more playmakers on our roster than they do, our backup players are more talented and they get flagged a whole lot more. So we won that little contest.

Could we win if our first units played their first units? Hey! Maybe. Sometimes. But personally, I'd feel a lot less nervous if our guys outmatched the other guys in the big, rough tough department.

In a few ways, this game tells us where we need to improve as a franchise to be up there where we need to be.

No time to jump out windows, though. We're still a lot better than we were last year - maybe good enough to make the playoffs. Maybe.

I worry somewhat about the run defense. The seemed to run it between the tackles with ease. Makes me wonder what the heck is it going to take before Bell gets the start ahead of Russell Davis. I saw him get blown out of the hole twice in short yardage situations on that long drive in the first quarter. Plus he got flagged for offsides when the Chargers were backed up inside their own 5 to start the drive.

The second team D looked like they were getting picked apart by the pass. But then it was Doug Flutie they were playing against, not some 2nd string rookie.

The running game was pretty weak too. Hope Big gets back on the field soon.

I hope the Cards are only showing a small set of plays before the real season. They looked pretty vanilla on the field. But it would be good to keep it simple for now. The first few games they may be able to sneak up on some stuff with a new OC. It will take a few games before anyone has any tape on Sullivan's playcalling/playbook. Hopefully that's what Mac and Sullivan are thinking through the pre-season when the points don't matter.

Last time I looked, we threw only 14 passes but had 205 yds rushing on about 36 carries against a defense stacked against the run. And this was without our two best RBs.

Care to guess about what Shot-in-heine feels about this game?

Are there problem areas? Yes.

SSKorp, don't you mean our one best running back.

If Smith does for our running game what he did for season ticket sales the most we'll see of him is talking to the sideline officials or standing next to Mac.

Skkorp 90 of the yards came of one play. We got stuffed the first half. Our line could not get an opening for our RB's.

We didn't have our starting O-Line or our starting runningbacks. Would I have liked to have seen better? Yes. Am I worried about what I saw? No.

We did face one of the best running backs in the leauge in Tomlinson. He would do well against most teams. This is pre-season. The coordinators do not make as many adjustments as the regular season. On that drive, we did not give up 7 points, which says something about our players not quiting. We got over 200 yards rushing starting Scobey, who might not make the team. Anderson will be the #3 back. The Cards are a work in progress. Even Blake said last week that it will take a year for the young receivers to develop.

Hmmm ticket sales = performance on the field? didnt know that...

I dont know how/why everyone thinks Emmitt would make ticket sales jump off the chart. And I dont remember Emmitt ever promising he would put butts in the seats.

He may sell alot of jerseys, but season tickets??? Get real...

You are right, IMO he is the best or next to the best RB in the league. He is pretty good...

But their other backs were running all over us too.

Gee, I wonder why they used him in their season ticket promotions?

There would be more to wonder about if the Cardinals promotion team DIDNT use him.

But you really expected to see more people to attend the games because of Emmitt? Its gunna take winning before alot more people descide to get cooked everyother sunday.

pre season means very, very little. coaches use it to evaluate one-on-one match ups, viability of player combinations, and special teams play. everything else can go out the window.

real competition starts sept 7. thats when you want to start evaluating our chances at success.

I agree to a point, but to say they are not gunna use the preseason to get things flowing is plain blind.

This is also the time you get your guys in sink and ready to turn it on when its time.

Maybe they are using the first two pre-games for talent evaluation, and cuts. Then they will use the next to to tune up for the season. (One can only hope)

You mean, like our #2 QB?

Sorry, I forgot. McCown's not a rookie. He just looks like one.

It's time to end the McCown experiment for this season. Josh is making it painfully obvious that he is not a viable back-up QB yet. With all of the cap space we have, not having an experienced back-up QB would be scandalous.
