My computer crashed about three months ago, and I lost a bunch of photos and other things that I would like to try to get back.

I did a free scan with a few programs and it appears (at least according to them) that I can get these items back.

I have already tried a bunch of methods on my own to get stuff back without success.

In any case, has anyone ever purchased one of these programs? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Agree with Nidan I don't know what you mean by crash, which is important.

I had a hard disk fail twice in the last 5 years. Both times my IT buddy where I was working at the time was able to use a program called Knopix to retrieve my data off the disks. He just removed the bad drive from the computer, inserted it into one at work and using Knopix he could read the drive and copy over files which included a lot of pictures.

Crashed meaning I was working on it and it shut down by itself without warning. I had to reinstall all software and run recovery. It's done this before, but I was able to find my files. (They were listed as hidden.) Unfortunately, this is not the case this time around.

I need to update my virus software as I am sure that is part of the problem. Any suggestions for good virus protection?

AVG is really good. AVG Free 9.0

For scanning your computer for spyware...I'd also use MalwareBytes or SuperAntiSpyware.

All free.
