I am confused about why Royce Clayton would not have accepted a 1 year deal with us in his hometown and ends up settling for a minor league contract with Washington. I felt his defense was solid and his offense adequate and it seemed like his relationship with the Dbacks went stone cold. Is there more to this story? Was he a clubhouse cancer or considered a person with a poor work ethic? I am happy to get our new second baseman but Counsel to short until Drew is ready seemsweak and not a great stop gap and Clayton would have been a good one year policy. Any thoughts?

I was a tad bit surprised to see Royce turn down a guaranteed spot in the lineup (even if it is for only one year) to sign a Minor League deal with a team that's pretty well stacked with middle IF. Apparently, his market value wasn't what HE felt it should be.

That's why he turned down our offer -- he said he felt he was worth a multi-year deal at $2-4 Million a year. It's that greener grass thing... He was overrated and over-praised locally (as this recent turn of events shows) and he took the hype seriously. Tsk.

Craig Counsell is a solid fielder (at any infield position), a steady hitter (who doesn't try to put every ball into the air), a good baserunner, and the kind of player who makes his team better than his stats.

And he still has some gas in the tank.

For what he's done for the D'backs, right til the present (he was a better leadoff hitter last year than Tony Womack ever was), I would hardly call CC "weak".

At this time, he's still the closest player we have to a leadoff hitter.
