Boozer's option is picked up
Cavaliers get a bargain for upcoming season

CLEVELAND - As expected, the Cavaliers picked up forward Carlos Boozer's contract option by Wednesday's deadline.
Boozer is coming off a breakout second NBA season in which he averaged 15.5 points and 11.4 rebounds. He was the runner-up for the NBA's Most Improved Player Award and recently was extended an invitation to join the U.S. Olympic Team.
Yet he will be one of the biggest bargains in the NBA next season, earning $695,046 as the lowest-paid Cavalier.
In what has turned into a shrewd negotiating move, Cavaliers general manager Jim Paxson gave Boozer a $75,000 bonus over the NBA minimum in the first year of his contract in exchange for inserting a team option for his third season.
Boozer had hoped the Cavaliers would decline the option and he and the team could workout an extension this summer. However, under the rules of the collective-bargaining agreement, the Cavaliers could only offer Boozer a deal starting at the mid-level exception, expected to be $5 million. He also would've been an unrestricted free agent, meaning he could've taken more money to sign elsewhere.
By exercising the option, the Cavaliers keep him for another season at the league minimum and retain his rights. Boozer will now become a restricted free agent next summer, meaning the Cavaliers can match any offer.
``I'm not going to dwell on it; we'll just talk about an extension later on,'' Boozer said Wednesday. ``Right now, I'm just concentrating and getting ready for the Olympics.''
Paxson and Boozer's agent, Rob Pelinka, already have started extension talks. The team has also helped Boozer with sponsorship and other revenue-generating opportunities aimed to increase his overall compensation in the interim.
