On the access road of the Interstate between Austin & San Antonio (@ New Braunfelds), there used to be a rundown Texaco station. If you walked past the Pennzoil cans thru the back door, there was a big ol' shed; behind which was a smoke-shed where they BBQ'd outrageous brisket. They served it on paper plates along with white bread & butter and a bottle of Pearl Beer.

Anyone know if the place is still there?

Jeff, I grew up in New Braunfels, are you refering to the New Braunfels Smokehouse? If so its still there, although undoubtedly different look and possibly location. That town has tripled in size since 1986, from 20ish thousand people to 60ish thousand people. I don't go very often, about once every 3 years or so, but every year I go or drive through there, it looks remarkably different.

I think it'd be great for a group of us to get together at a bar in Austin. Something Central may be the easiest for everyone. 3rd Base isn't that big, but they usually accommodate non-Cowboy fans pretty easily.

This place is right off I-35 and is also easily accessilble from the Toll Road. They also claim to have a couple of separate areas.

OK so everyone list what part of town you are in:

Northwest. 620/183

At least 4 or 5 times a year, I awake at 3 am with an intense craving for smoked brisket.

I know about the Smokehouse (and have ordered stuff from their catalog) but I'm not sure if it's the same place as that Texaco station.

Live off in the rural area 60 miles south of San Antonio, but up for a Austin meeting if most of you guys or at least the ones in Central Texas want to meet up for a game at a sports place. And there are tons of BBQ places in NB Jeff, but I will ask my sister who lives there about the Texaco place

Lomax getting hurt and playing in the NFC East just killed the Cardinals in Phoenix. Going 5-11,5-11,4-12,4-12 and getting outscored by 120 points a year in the four years after the inaugural season isn't how you build excitement about your football team. Add in the TV blackouts and that half or more of their televised away games were over before most people got home from Church and you have a recipe for disaster.

I probably saw more Cards games on TV than people living in Phoenix did.

Surprised at how many Cardinals fans live in the Austin area. Maybe we should get together and take over a Sports Bar on Sundays like the transplants do in Cave Creek. :D
all you have to do is buy a bar then lol. I might do that out here in cincinnati if I stay here and don't move to dallas. I used to live on luke afb and watched the games at the club on base. it was fun because we were all from different parts. we would drink and talk so much trash. the steelers and cowboys fans sometimes were sent into one room away from everyone else lol.

It was hyped as a BBQ joint on billboards leading up to it. But on-site, the smokehouse may have been obscured by the presence of the Texaco station in front of it.

(It was a long long time ago on one single visit to San Antonio so it's hard to be sure I have every detail right (I had to meet someone from Austin halfway between Austin and S.A. to deliver a display for a bottled Hawaiin Punch & Rum concoction aptly named "Rumdinger" and I somehow wound up at the smokehouse for lunch).

Jeff, I went to College in San Marcos which is between New Braunfels and Austin. I think you may be refering to Fushak's BBQ. It was a very run down smokehouse by a gas station. It had out of this world brisket and fajitas. This was mid 80's so not sure it is still around but we had many plates of BBQ there and plenty of beer. All this talk of getting a group of Texas Cards fans together makes me remember how I thought me and my brother were the only Cards fans in Texas growing up. Moved to South Texas when I was 9 from St. Louis and stayed there through the hey day of Luv ya Blue(Oilers) and the Cowpukes and took all kinds of abuse over being a Cards fan. Look back now and realize that those were really great times. Damn, I think I will head out now and get me some BBq brisket for lunch:)

It seems this is a great place to have moved for someone that hates BBQ and Cowboys fans.

Hey I found the perfect Sports Bar for Centex Cardinal fans to get together:

Loop One and Parmer Lane.

WEIRDOS

I'll be there Sunday around 2:30.

:D

Thats awesome you guys.

Ive just never been able to appreciate or understand how an out of towner (or local) could be a fan of a non local team.

AZ born and raised. Cardinals, dbacks, coyotes, ASU, (when they arent playing ASU) UofA, Rattlers, Mercury?lol, Suns.

Like you have to go far out of your way to hear Cards news. i get the local paper, or just flip on the radio. or sit down in any local sports bar and begin speaking to whoever 90% chance they are a cards fan. Like I really like the Detroit Lions, but i couldnt imagine following them as my #1 team. I feel no connection to them. If they win the superbowl, its not 'Tempe Arizona' on all the sports magazines.

more power to you, must be lonely lol. :)

I do support the local team. The Longhorns and the RR Express. Austin doesn't have an NFL team. :D

As for the Cardinals affiliation, Houston was the St.Louis Cardinals AAA farm club before they got a major league baseball team.

Sweet Baby Ray!!! I thought we had a winner there and I was right:) I went for Chicago BBQ brisket yesterday after you metioned this but it sure wasn't Fuschak's....I say we all do road trip to Austin and have DuckJake spring for the best Texas BBQ brisket around.:D That would be Fuschak's!!! Must have went there twice a week once for brisket and once for fajitas, back in the day. Good times.

New Champ: Smokey Mo's in Cedar Park. Doesn't have the atmosphere of a Kruez's in Lockhart or Louis Millers in Taylor or the rep of the Market in Elgin. All it does have is some kick atz BBQ.

actually it is more fun to root for your team out of town. nothing like going to a cowboys game outside of dallas and seeing 30-50% of the stadium full of cowboys fans. I went to a mavericks game in phoenix a couple of years ago and watched dirk win the game with like 4 seconds left. the crowd goes silent. nothing like it.

and technology makes it much easier now. why open a paper when you can hit a button on your phone and get any story that you want?
