Cooney Writing DreamWorks' Argonauts
Source: Variety
October 27, 2004

Michael Cooney (Identity) will write DreamWorks adventure film Argonauts, reports Variety. He will begin the project once he's wrapped Bad Ronald for Warner Bros.

The trade says the project is a tentpole in the vein of Raiders of the Lost Ark and takes place on the eve of WWII, when a group of treasure hunters think they've figured out the location of the fabled sunken ship of Jason and the Argonauts, a vessel whose contents are believed to contain the mythical Golden Fleece.

John Baldecchi and Jason Hoffs are producing with Stephen Sommers and his partner and his editor Bob Ducsay. Sommers was originally attached to direct a script by Simon Kinberg, but will now only produce.

A draft by Cooney is expected by early next year for a 2006 holiday season release.

Does anyone else love those old adventure/fantasy movies, like Jason and the Argonauts, Sinbad, etc?

I loved the skeletal soldiers and odd creatures in those films.

I actually went and saw most of them as a kid at Los Arcos Mall's underground theater. They usually played 10 films a summer, and you had to watch a Bugsy Malone or Pippi Longstocking for every Sinbad or Argonauts film, but it was very cool all the same.

Hell yeah I love those flicks! I even own Jason and the Argonauts. Clash of the Titans too, among many others. This movie sounds pretty cool. I was afraid there for a moment it was another cheesy remake idea.
