My hunch has been that upon Carson Palmer's exit interview the Cardinals expressed that they would like him back, but at a reduced salary so that they can free up added cap space to sign key free agents. Palmer seemed gun-ho about coming back prior to his exit interview. Thus, perhaps feeling slighted by the Cardinals' off-season game plan, he has been mulling over whether he wants to accept a return at a lower salary.

I don't think they'll necessarily lower his salary but will try to structure it differently and create a lower cap hit. In fact, that may be the reason for the delay in the announcements and they are putting the final touches on a deal.

I could see after a long grind a player of CPs age might want to take some time to think about it. Maybe talk to the family and see what their feeling are on living another NFL season with dad being gone for 8 months. I don't think m0ney is CP motivation at all, and with the pounding he takes for the sake of the team, they don't need him to take a pay cut. There are other creative ways to create salary cap space.

Sure would be nice to have a QBOF and WROF on the roster this year to learn from Carson and Fitz.

It could just be cheap publicity for the team.
Maybe they just don't want to overshadow the Superbowl...because Palmer's announcement is bound to be more exciting than tomorrow's snoozefest...lol

I can tell you with 100% confidence that none of it went down the way you presume.

Now there's a exit interview designed to convince a guy to return.

Hint: first you get him to commit and then you can have a creative accounting conversation as I doubt he's taking a penny less in the end.

Agreed and 12 mil for a starting QB is chump change. The Cards knew what his cap hit would be this year and I would think they were willing to eat it.
