Best news of the offseason. I really hope the Cards come out and give him a top 3 coaching salary. Show the league that this is our guy and he's not going anywhere for a very long, long time.

With this extension I hope they give Whiz the freedom to bring in who he wants for DC or assistants and pay the freight.

The salaries of NFL head coaches aren't readily known. It's believed new Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is near the top, making about $7 million a year. First-time head coaches are averaging about $3 million a year.

Whisenhunt has received an average of $2.5 million, not including significant bonuses for his team's accomplishments over the past two years.

Other NFL coaches receiving extensions over the last two years are averaging $4 million to $5 million, according to reports. Saints coach Sean Payton received an extension last year that reportedly pays him an average of between $4 million to $5 million.
Some salary info from the article.

Whiz has had complete freedom over his staff from Day 1, IMO. If he didn't, the Bidwills wouldn't be paying Grimm $1 million-a-year.

That is not true.

Whiz signed and had to agree to keep Pendergast. I am sure of it.

Great news, and I would have been shocked to death and back if it didn't happen.

or to put it another way. This will happen, and it is a no brainer.

This is what I like:

I'd always much rather see a significant bonus option than just a high salary.

The way I read it, Whiz was not asked to keep Pendy as a condition of employment, but to strongly consider his candidacy for the role as DC.

A subtle but important distinction.

In a vacuum yes. But that's why most people dont sign incentive laden contract unless they have no other choice. Im almost positive Whis will ask for more upfront salary, and a significant one at that

I don't know about that. Whis is a very positive guy and knows what he is capable of. Sometimes you can make a lot more with a good bonus arrangement than you can with just a salary. I wonder what his bonus was for making the SB last year? I sure he also got a bonus for winning the division and the conference. He might have made $5 million last year.

This is true, but there is always the security of having a high paying salary regardless. Most NFL teams go through ebbs and flows. There will be years where we are good. But there will be one or two years when the Cards dont make the playoffs or tank.

I equate this to sales jobs. There are those that are commission only, those that are half commission and half salary and those that are mostly salary with bonuses. In a recession, the ones with the larger salary have more security.

He already selected his DC.
I was making a open statement based on bringing in a top name DC or trying to get someone like Butler from Pitt. Both options would be costly. And our defense is not very good right now. I realize we have been going round and round about if it's talent or coaching. IMO the DC is not doing his job. Tackling is poor, players are constantly out of position and QB's have all day to throw the ball against us. Is it all coaching? No. But a better coach has his players better prepared.

Doesnt matter losers the 49ers are going to kick your butts no matter who you get as dc, also btw expect to only one win 1 game if that this year lmao Alex Smith is going to pass for 300 yards plus every game against your highschool defense this year. I could have played in the nfl but I had a bad ankle after playing for usc.

Butler is the heir presumptive to the DC job in Pitt, and has made it clear that he doesn't want to leave. I'm more impressed with the strides the "D" took in Davis' first year than you, and believe that he will get to keep his job because Whiz wants it that way.
