The Arizona Cardinals have some interest in a free agent cornerback. According to ESPN's Field Yates, they had former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. in for a visit.
Samuel was drafted by the Chargers in the second round in 2021 with the 47th overall pick. In four seasons for the Chargers, he played in 50 games (47 starts), picking off six passes (two in each of his first three seasons) and breaking up 26 passes.
He had a disappointing 2024 season, playing in only four games. He landed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury that ended his season.
He is 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds and plays physically. Interestingly enough, he was drafted two selections before the Cardinals had their second-round pick in 2021, and he was believed to have been a target. With Samuel off the board, the selected receiver Rondale Moore, but it was believed at the time that, had he been available, he would have been the pick. Granted, that was a different front office than now.
The Cardinals have a reasonably okay cornerback room. They have veteran Sean Murphy-Bunting returning, they have Garrett Williams, who has developed into a premier slot corner, and 2024 second-round pick Max Melton, in addition Star Thomas, who started 15 games last season and 22 over his first two seasons.
Samuel would strengthen that group.
We will see if a deal gets done out of this meeting. '
