The Arizona Cardinals have made obvious improvements in the offseason in free agency, almost all on defense. But how much better are they?
In PFF's new post-free agency power rankings, they barely make the top 20, coming in at No. 20 and behind everyone else in the NFC West.
Their place in the NFL draft tells us that, based on the end of last season, they were the 17th-best team in the league, coming in at No. 16 in the first round.
So even with the defensive improvements and players coming back from injury, they are technically worse off than now.
Weird.
Of course, other teams have made improvements as well.
In terms of the NFC West, the Los Angeles Rams rank the highest at No. 9, while the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks come in near the Cardinals at Nos. 17 and 18, respectively.

With significant needs on defense, particularly in the pass rush, the Cardinals wasted no time addressing the issue, signing one of PFF’s top 10 free agents in Josh Sweat. The former Eagle is a natural fit in Arizona, having played in Jonathan Gannon’s system in Philadelphia.
That move is a strong start in rebuilding the Cardinals defense, but more work remains. If the unit can take a step forward, it would relieve some of the pressure on Kyler Murray and the offense.
