Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery turned in a sharp performance on Wednesday, firing 2 2/3 scoreless innings against the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields.
The outing felt particularly important for the veteran starter, who is competing for the final spot in the Diamondbacks rotation.
Montgomery is coming off a miserable 2024 season in which he posted a 6.23 ERA and was bumped from the starting rotation.
He also pitched poorly in his first Cactus League outing, giving up five runs in one-third of an inning, walking two, hitting a batter and giving up two hits, including a homer.
He was much sharper in a simulated game on the backfields last week and appeared to carry over that success Wednesday afternoon.
Montgomery gave up three hits — all singles — and walked one, but mostly threw strikes and limited hard contact. He walked one and struck out two.
It would be hard to objectively argue that he has outpitched either of the other starters in the hunt for the No. 5 spot in the rotation — especially Brandon Pfaadt, who dominated the Padres’ projected Opening Day lineup on Sunday in Peoria.
