Firing 98 mph fastballs and 90 mph sliders, New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey struck out 11 in his major league debut three years ago. That start happened to come at Chase Field against the Diamondbacks, who bypassed Harvey in the 2010 draft, instead selecting right-hander Barret Loux, whom they never signed.

With their comp pick a year later, the Diamondbacks drafted right-hander Archie Bradley, a hard-throwing dual-sport athlete from Oklahoma. They got him signed, then developed him, and Bradley will make his third career big-league start Wednesday night against the Texas Rangers.

I read that article. The thing is ARZ could have had Bradley & either Matt Harvey or Chris Sale but opted to draft Barrett Loux because they thought he would be easier to sign. They should have hung on to Bauer as both Towers & Miggy are gone now. Man the Towers regime was atrocious.

Last night against the Rangers, Archie pitched 5 innings, struck out 6 and gave up 1 run on 2 hits, with 5 walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Of course he has to work on his control. Steve or Bob said that he's had control problems before. Less walks would have theoretically held down his pitch count and allowed him to go beyond the 5th inning.

But I also looked at it another way. If all 5 walks had been hits, his line would have been 5 innings, 1 run on 7 hits, 6 strikeouts and a hit-batsman. 'Not too shabby.

Of course, if the walks had been hits, the chances are greater that extra bases would have been taken and he might not have held them to only 1 run.

Am I rationalizing? I never thought I'd say that giving up a walk might be better than a base hit.

He pitched 6 innings...
Oops. Time to clean my bi-focals. :)

But what about my question?

Is it better to give up 1 run, 2 hits, 6 walks and 1 hit-batsman in . . . 6 innings . . . or 1 run, 8 hits and a hit-batsman?

If you're faced with a certainty of either a walk or a hit, you'd rather have the walk, but that is never the scenario. Its never certain that putting the ball in play will result in a hit, while you throw four balls and the guy is on base.

Other than for strategic purposes, like creating force outs, its better to make the hitter beat you.

Asking if you would rather put a batter on base with a walk or hit is like asking "would you rather your wife have an affair with a neighbor or coworker?" :)

Neither is acceptable.

But giving up hits and walks is a lot more inevitable than your wife . . . etc.

There are a lot more faithful marriages than perfect games or no-hitters. At least, I hope so. :D

I love posting on here but hate using the sarcasm symbol, it defeats the purpose.
