Anyone "in the know" know anything about this? If it plays out with a loss of scholly, seems like next year would be the ideal time for it to hit the program considering the transition and expected down year.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The NCAA is investigating Arizona's basketball program for alleged recruiting violations, according to a letter sent to university president Robert Shelton.

The Arizona Daily Star reported on its Web site that the allegations stem from initially self-reported violations involving an elite recruiting event at McKale Center known as the Cactus Classic.

The letter, obtained through a public records request, says the NCAA could expand its investigation if it obtains new information while inspecting the program.

Penalties for recruiting violations could include a loss of scholarships and/or recruiting visits.

The NCAA told Shelton it planned to complete its investigation by May 1

The Cats reported this violation on their own earlier this year, Im sure this is just the NCAA formal look into the situation. This has to do with a letter sent out by Jim Storey (who runs goazcats.com) to donors asking for donations for the Cactus Classic, which brings in numerous potential recruits. The letter, which was on UofA letterhead, had Lute's signature on the bottom of the letter... although Lute claims to have never signed or approved of the letter.

Under NCAA rules, a school or athletic representative cannot offer, provide or arrange financial assistance, directly or indirectly, to pay for a recruit's expenses for any period prior to his university enrollment.

This is a minor violation. I dont expect much to come of this unless there is much more to the story that I havent heard about yet.

Yeah this is the old story.

The problem for UA is that because of how Lute left, people aren't sure he told the truth. First he denied it happened, then said he wasn't involved, then said he'd taken steps to correct it which seemed to imply he actually did know etc.

I don't think anybody thinks it was a big deal just that it was a violation and it was self reported.

What kills me, this happens and will be resolved by May, ESPN hands them USC and Mayo on a silver platter last March and they still haven't resolved that one?

Haven't you guys realized by now that the NCAA doesn't punish anyone for anything these days? And assuming they do the punishment is even less so when the university self-reports and the monetary value in question is less than $100 per player.

The only reason this is even mentioned is because Arizona is still a name program.

I don't think that is appropriate to say in this thread. Fun and murder should never be talked about together.
