FAYETTEVILLE — A lot of hours on the phone and in the film room are in Sam Pittman's future.

The spring transfer portal opens Wednesday and runs through April 25, and Arkansas football is poised to be an active player in college football's free-agency period. Pittman spoke to the media Tuesday recapping the Hogs' scrimmage over the weekend, but a majority of his time at the microphone was spent discussing Arkansas' plans over the next 10 days.

Pittman said if the Razorbacks don't lose anyone through the portal, he'd like to add five players to the roster. That number could go up if there are any surprise departures, but Arkansas feels good about keeping its starters and second-team players this cycle.

More: Why Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman is confident in his offense despite lost production

"I don’t know exactly what’s going on behind closed doors. We talk as a staff about it all the time," Pittman said. "There are a couple of guys, but the ones that we’re hearing about are not, you know, high on the depth chart. Disgruntled maybe because of where they’re at on the depth chart."

As for specific positions, Arkansas feels good about its personnel on offense. Pittman doesn't envision Arkansas signing anyone on that side of the ball, but he won't rule out an addition if the right opportunity arises.

The defense is a different story. Pittman wants to add multiple safeties and 'three or four' defensive backs overall. The Hogs might go after a linebacker if the right fit is available. Pittman has said he would target an experienced veteran at that position.

The defensive line is the most intriguing unit. There aren't many proven commodities at the position, but that doesn't automatically signal a need to add through the portal. Arkansas will get injured players like Cam Ball and Ken Talley back after the spring, and Pittman has been impressed with the available players in recent weeks.

"Ian Geffrard and Danny (Saili) and Quincy Rhodes," Pittman said. "Those guys, we're going, 'Man, they're very talented. When are they going to let it turn loose?' And all three of those guys have. Really, really excited about those guys."
