For those who didn't see the end of the game.

(Now I will preface this by saying Arkansas would have only gotten the ball back with about 30 seconds or less, but they only needed a field goal. However that doesn't change the fact that what just happened prevented them any opportunity to get the ball back.)

So here's what happened.

Alabama ball 3rd down, clock running, 1:01 left play clock running down 3,,, 2,,, 1,,,

Penalty, Alabama False start...

So here's what the genius officials did.

They stopped the GAME clock with 1:01 left, enforced the penalty, gave Alabama a new playclock with 25 seconds on it, started the play clock AND started the game clock again.

The result being Alabama got to run an ADDITIONAL 25 seconds off the game clock, (so now there was less than 40 seconds left) ran it on 3rd down, didn't get it and boom, the game was over.

My argument is two fold.

First, there is NO WAY that is the correct ruling, or Second, if that is the rule, that is the stupidest rule in the history of sports.

If that's really the rule, then a offense could run the clock down indefinitely and win the game, even if there is a full half of football left.

Think about it. If you can run the play clock down to 1, get a false start penalty, go back 5 yards and get ANOTHER 25 second game clock, you can just keep doing that indefinitely till there is no time left.

That was totally ridiculous!

I have to agree. It just didn't seem right that the offensive team gets to run more time off the clock because they got a false start penalty. I mean, if that's the rule, then teams should stop snapping the ball in those situations and just take penalties until the clock runs out.

I was really hoping Arkansas would win. The mistakes they make are just killing them in these close games.

Yes it's crazy that the officials let it go down like that, and the announcers totally tried to sweep it under the rug the only thing they said was something like; Well the way that worked out with the penalty is that now Alabama can run out the clock."

BTW I know they got it wrong because in the UofA game they got a false start late with the clock running and sure enough, the penalty stopped the clock. Unless the rules are different in the SEC, in which case any coach who has the lead at any point in any game next week is a fool for not employing this strategy. Just get a lead and break out the lawn chairs. Have your offensive lineman take turns "false starting" until the game it's game over man, game over!

It's just really annoying me that they let it go down that way and nobody even said anything. The Arkansas coach barely protested! It was like everyone was still in shock. Did that just happen?
