Arsenal meet agent to finalise first major summer deal

Arsenal have scheduled a meeting with the representative of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres as the club look to finalise a deal.

Gyokeres is one of the leading transfer targets for the North Londoners this summer as Arsenal look to bring in a goalscorer.

The failure to sign a recognised number nine has been cited as factor in the club’s faltering title challenge. Arsenal are now pushing ahead with plans to bring in reinforcements.

Gyokeres is arguably the most coveted centre-forward in Europe, after two prolific seasons in Portuguese football. The 26-year-old has scored 40+ goals in each of the last two campaigns and was named Primeira Liga Player of the Year as Sporting won the title last season.

His contract at The Estádio José Alvalade has a release clause of €100m (£83.6m) but there is an expectation Sporting will sell for around £60m. Arsenal believe that fee represents value and Correio da Manha are reporting that the Gunners have arranged a formal meeting with the player’s agent.

His representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, is a friend of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and the Premier League side are hopeful that relationship can help them win the race.

Manchester United have also been heavily linked with Gyokeres, who worked under Ruben Amorim in Lisbon. However, a lack of Champions League football could hinder the Red Devils in their attempt to sign him.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League table but could secure qualification by winning the Europa League. Amorim’s side take on Lyon in the quarter-finals next month.
