Arguement

Anyway, I had a Cubs fan over who said that Andy Pettitte was a hall of fame pitcher... who here believes that he is a HOF pitcher AND I said that I would rather pitch Webb any day of the week than Pettitte... does anyone out there believe in what I say, or I am out of bounds?

Andy Pettitte is not a hall of fame pitcher, but has obviously had a better career up to this point and is a better pitcher than Webb. However, I wouldn't trade Webb for Pettitte as Webb is younger and cheaper, nor do I think he has reached the peak of his development yet.

If Andy Pettitte started his career with any other team besides the Yankees this wouldn't be an issue. Still he has 172 career wins at the age of 33 (compared to 192 at age 39 for Schilling). He'll be on the ballot but I don't think he'll get elected.

Agreed. However, I think if I had to pitch someone on opening day in 2006 I would pick Webb over Pettitte. Andy had a great year last year but I am willing to bet that he won't come close to repeating those numbers.

While I think that is kinda impressive that he has that many wins by his age you also have to take into perspective who he played with. Of course he is going to win more games playing on the Yankees than any other team in the league. This is not a bashing Pettitte thread, I think he is a good pitcher but far from a great one. I am a firm believer that only the best players should make it into the Hall of Fame. Pettitte is a great #2 pitcher for any team and would be the #1 on a couple of teams, but not a HOF pitcher.

Bert Blyleven can't get elected with his numbers..... You won't see Pettitte get a sniff....

If he pitches until age 40 and adds 75-100 more wins to his resume, he'll get some HOF consideration...but, it will still be a tough sell.
