I must confess. I am an off-season basketball junkie.

I think I enjoy the off-season maneuvering more than the actual games during the year. And this year is prime-time for wheeling and dealing.

A lotto pick, cap-space, expansion draft, potentially max level FA money. It just doesn't get better than this.

Thanks for the article George.

I was supposed to writing more articles during the off season, but it is a totally different style than posting on the board. I have to wear my "journalist's hat" rather than write like a fan. I have to explain stuff that everyone one the board already knows. It is hard to know what the reader knows, but I have to assume "not much".

The intellectual give and take on the board is more fun because the knowledge level is so high. People not only give opinions, but do a decent job of backing them up with facts.

One of the options the Suns have in the draft is to take someone in Europe and leave him there. This way his salary could not count against the Salary Cap.

George . . . IIRC there is still a "cap-hold" for first round draft picks for at least a year. It doesn't effect teams over the cap but it does obviously effect those who are under.

We went through this discussion about a week ago. The rules as quoted say that a player does not count against the cap if he has a valid contract with another team. Do you have evidence to the contrary?

Link--Larry Coon FAQ

If the player is already under contract, or signs a contract with a non-NBA team, the team retains the player's draft rights for one year after the player's obligation to the non-NBA team ends. Essentially, the clock stops as long as the player plays pro ball outside the NBA. Players are not included in the team's team salary while the player is under contract with a non-NBA team.

Looks to me like George is right.
