The NFL strove for parity and ended up with widespread mediocrity. The salary cap combined with some extreme salaries is forcing teams to play with obvious weak spots. I wonder too if there's a shortage of talent because guys are choosing to play other sports due to the concussion danger. I know there would only be a couple now but I think there's a real possibility of multi-sport athletes starting to go to sports that don't shorten their lives. There's a definite talent shortage. Look at the Cards. They've invested so much money in Palmer/Fitz, that they couldn't keep 2 valued safeties. This is not to say Fitz & Palmer aren't valuable and haven't earned those dollars, but does anyone think they can play up to those numbers? In the free agent market to be competitive teams have to offer extra years. Yes, NFL contracts aren't guaranteed, but cutting someone with remaing prorated bonuses can kill a team's cap. Also with a shortage of available solutions, there seems to be a natural tendency to try to squeeze out one more year. When I did my wins prediction for the year I mentioned I had an unusually large number of highly contenscious games. Several people thought I was silly for saying Tenn, Detroit and Texas would be tough games. Well the Cards lost to Detroit and Tenn/Texas look like tough games to me. This will be a year full of surprises. I'm just not certain the Cards can survive the year without an O-line. If that group doesn't rise up Palmer may not even come close to that contract as mere survival becomes an issue. As to this week I think Dallas has more talent but after the weekend, there aren't many sure things left.

Harry, I don't know whether it's good or bad that the talent may have been diluted but one thing for sure, there were a lot of tight competitive games yesterday that were exciting to watch and gave hope to every fan out there that their team could win. Maybe that is what the NFL is shooting for, fans to stay engaged with their team for longer periods because they are in the hunt longer. The one guarantee is if it outs money in their pockets, they will like it, meaning the owners.

IMO, this parity is why NFL is king. Any team can win any sunday. Much better than the other major sports, especially basketball.

But, I agree with the premise here that the league and the football being on display is the worst I have seen in a long time.

Never was a fan of college football, but I hate to say it, they are better games right now.

This football season has been pretty poor so far when it comes to talent, and stringing offensive drives together (its all about the big play now), has me actually thinking about the beginning of Hockey season next week, and that NEVER used to happen.

We will see if things improve AFTER week 4.

I bet if we looked a lot better you would be more engaged :)

The Ringer NFL show has said that because of restrictions on practices and an unwillingness to play starters during the preseason, there is a feeling in the league that September no longer matters. Take the first two or three weeks with a grain of salt, and these teams will sort themselves out after the first month.

Completely agree and then couple that with kids coming out of college with no clue what they are doing and reduced practice time, makes for avg. football being played all over the place.

All good points by everyone and I think that's a reason why Bask has gone with older players more than some of us wanted. The safeties we brought in were cheaper and veterans are less prone to making mental mistakes. Also why rookies seem to have a harder time getting on the field.

So far this season the results haven't been great except Butler and Reddick seem to be good picks and are contributing.

Swearinger was named captain of the Redskins' defense by his own players. Says a lot about his immediate impact on that team.

It's pretty crazy that we lost Swearinger, Campbell, and Jefferson in the same year. Even crazier, that the D is still carrying this team after losing all of them.
