ASU can’t afford to fire 3 major-sport coaches

By Bob Moran, Tribune
July 3, 2004

There’s a segment of the Arizona State fandom so bitterly frustrated about the Sun Devils’ performances in the major sports this past academic term they’d like to clean house.

Today, as a public service, the Tribune is providing this group the cold, hard facts of just how much that would cost.

Let’s say football and basketball have losing seasons, and baseball doesn’t qualify for the College World Series, the same results as last season.

Football coach Dirk Koetter has three years remaining on his contract after the ‘04 campaign, as does athletic director Gene Smith.

Basketball coach Rob Evans will have two years left. Baseball coach Pat Murphy will be down to a single season.

Based on salaries from the previous fiscal year, it would cost ASU $2.3 million to dismiss Koetter, $1.22 million to dismiss Evans, $870,000 to dismiss Smith, and $220,000 to dismiss Murphy.

That adds up to $4.61 million

And, of course, that doesn’t include the price tag for replacing them and their assistants.

Talk is cheap.

Firing people isn’t.

I don't believe any of the three should be fired... yet. You can't fire Murphy because of his track record, just because the team has had a few average seasons doesn't mean he's lost it.

As far as Dirk goes, he deserves maybe one more year. After this season if he doesn't get this team going he should be fired.
