Arizona State returned half of its ticket allotment of 8,000 for the Vitalis Sun Bowl and still is trying to sell 1,500 of the 4,000 tickets that it was required to purchase.

Any unsold tickets, priced at $35 apiece, for the Dec. 31 game against Purdue in El Paso, Texas, will be covered in ASU's $750,000 bowl expense budget, Athletic Director Gene Smith said Wednesday. The Sun Bowl payout is $1.5 million per team, with half of that shared among Pac-10 schools.

"We knew it would be a challenge," selling tickets for a New Year's Eve bowl, Smith said. "I didn't have an expectation. We're doing our best to provide services for fans who want to go."

Kinda Pathetic that they can't sell more than 2500 tickets. El Paso isn't that far.

Poor tickets sales here could bite the Sun Devils later, because bowls look at ticket sale potential, and will take a lower ranked team over a higher ranked team based on past ticket sale history.

Methinks all that talk about the holiday bowl (san diego) and getting bumped to spend new years in el paso has alot to do about the ticket problems.

Even if you don't want to go to El Paso, ASU has a program in place that you can buy tickets (support the program) and, if you don't want to go to the game, have the tickets donated to personel at Fort Bliss (support the troops). Seems as though that combination of things isn't all that appealing to folks this year.

Online legion pushes donated tickets past 1,500

An online legion of Boilermaker fans has helped push Sun Bowl ticket sales beyond 4,300, with more than 1,500 tickets destined for Fort Bliss soldiers and dependents and underprivileged children in the El Paso area.

As of Tuesday afternoon, ticket sales through the Athletic Ticket Office totaled 4,307. The final figure for 2002, when Purdue defeated Washington 34-24, was 2,777. In 2001, 3,327 tickets were sold through Purdue.

More than 600 Purdue fans have donated tickets. With 1,505 tickets purchased for donation, online Boilermaker fans are closing in on their goal of 2,000 tickets for donation.
