Jason Forcier is taking to the nickname some are giving him: Jake II.
Whether his quarterback career at Arizona State pans out like that of Jake the First remains to be seen. But Forcier, of San Diego, who committed Wednesday to ASU, has the same scrambling ability that Jake Plummer used to take the Sun Devils to the 1997 Rose Bowl and himself into the NFL.
"I watched a lot of ASU," said Forcier, who was 10 when Plummer was a senior. "It was fun watching him. They've had a mobile quarterback and had success."
Plummer played for Bruce Snyder, but current head coach Dirk Koetter is a fan of the dual-threat quarterback. Forcier has passed for 1,486 yards and 20 touchdowns in seven games and greatly improved his passing mechanics since transferring from run oriented Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif. He has scoring runs this season of 65, 66 and 99 yards.
Forcier, now at St. Augustine High School, is ranked No. 9 nationally by Scout.com. His quarterback coach is Dick Van Raaphorst, father of Jeff Van Raaphorst, who guided ASU to the 1987 Rose Bowl title.
"He's helped me a tremendous amount," Forcier said of the elder Van Raaphorst. "I had pretty good mechanics to begin with, but he's made me so much better with the fine points of the game."
Forcier also was interested in Utah, which earlier received a commitment from Josh Portis, ranked No. 11 by Scout.com. "Things happen for a reason," Forcier said.
Other schools interested in Forcier: Oregon, UCLA, Colorado and San Diego State.
Arizona redshirt freshman quarterback Richard Kovalcheck, now starting, also attended St. Augustine.
"He's a little bit different than Kovalcheck," St. Augustine head coach Jerry Ralph said of Forcier, 6-foot-2, 205 pounds with 4.57 speed over 40 yards.
"Richard has a bigger arm. We never really ran Richard that much. Jason can run flat-out, not one guy is going to bring him down. He's real dynamic on offense. He's going to make an impact at the next level and early."
